If the Civic had an engine that made a broader torque curve to begin with (K24 etc) then a 600HP Civic Vs that Mustang would be a much better race. The problem with the smaller displacement engines is yes they might make 600 HP at 8k RPM, but from 4k to 7k it’s only making 300ish on its way up to peak whereas something like that Mustang is 800 HP at like 7-8k rpm But also carries 600+ from 4k all the way to that 7-8k. There’s just so much more average power that the weight advantage wasn’t enough for the Civic in this case with that setup.
