His book Fall of Carthage is also pretty good, highly recommended if you want to read more on Roman / antiquity military history

Great review. Are there any illustrations in the middle of the book (Caesar by Goldsworthy)? If so, what are they? I ordered a different edition and I don’t think it does, so was wondering if yours has any :(

If you like Goldsworthy's "Caesar: Life of a Colossus", you should definitely check out his book: "Augustus: First Emperor of Rome (Yale)"; "Augustus: From Revolutionary to Emperor (Weidenfeld & Nicolson)". It is a biography of Augustus, the First Emperor of Rome, and the book serves as a sequel to "Caesar: Life of a Colossus". The book is not very heavy on the military side, but is overall very enjoyable and dramatic as you read - in a story-like manner - about the very historical moment of Rome's transition from Republic to Empire.

I have most your titles on audible. No time to read a physical book.

Whai remember about reading. adrian Golsworthy's Book on The Life Of Julius Gaius Caesar was the time the Pirates held him ransomed in an island as a youth and he asked the Pirates that how much were they asking for his ramson and they replied a sort of sum of money to which he replied i am much more worth than that and in another chapter it says that Caesar gave to the poor Bread Circus and Olive Oil now the Olive Oil made the Roman Legionary soldiers quite jealous saying why was Caesar being so generous as to give the poor some Olive oil

I love all the histories authored by Adrian Goldsworthy. His "Caesar: Life of a Colossus" and his "Augustus: First Emperor of Rome" brought me to my knees. Interestingly, the narrator mentions Andrew Roberts, another British historian that I love. Luckily, Goldsworthy and Roberts are quite prolific, so you don't need to worry about running out of their books.

This review makes Goldworthy's CAESAR sound like a military biography that focuses on his battle camoaigns.
It's not remotely that kind of book. It spends a great deal of time on Caesar's personal life and political career.
There's not a lot about Caesar's upbringing but we know very little about his childhood.
It's my favourite biography of Julius Caesar.

I consider Roman history modern. The Assyrian empire lasted 2000 years.
