1993 reminds me on the 1992/1993 ident of the German language RTL-TV Service

That first Sky One logo that was made in the USA made satellite television so different to what we'd be used to previously. You knew you were watching something different and after that some of them were utter rubbish

Clearly in 1997/98 those who were actually responsible for these were replaced, and the new guys had absolutely no idea what they were doing.

I have no idea why they decided to change Sky One into Sky Showcase? Sure, they never had the best content. Sure in its last few years, it just became a dumping ground for Simpsons re-runs. But if you really dissect Sky One, you’ll find it’s actually way better than Sky Showcase.

I wonder if the late 90s ones, just from how varied they are, might have been dependent on the context of what was being shown at the time?

These take me back. My family didn't get Sky until 1996 so the Tombstone ident (and its variants for the other Sky channels) will always be my favourite. I watched so much Star Trek during that time. The 1998 ident just makes me think of Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Friends.

About that 1993 ident... So Sky One was their main, general entertainment channel with the latest US shows. Among them, Beverly Hills 90210, which was a massive hit back in the day. The 1993 ident theme still has the main meloy from the past, but the remix very much reminds me of the 90210 title theme. Probably not a coincidence as it was considered a trendy and hip show, much like what Sky One was aiming for.

PS: Ahh, the good old days. Before being encrypted, Sky One was the main English language channel available throughout Europe, and it had content we didn't get in Hungary until years later. I used to watch Sky One all the time as a kid and i credit it for going from almost failing English class at high school to majoring in English years later.

@Adam Martyn Please note that both Sky One's musical themes from 1989 and 1993 were composed by Gari Communications in Nashville, TN - United States of America, although you may prefer much more the music that they've used in 1989 to '93 than it's sucessor, which sometimes is also my case with most satellite and cable television idents from the past decades.

The vast majority of these are absolute garbage. Sky One hasn’t had a good ident since the 1990s, with the original Sky One ident and the tombstones being the best examples.
The rest, from the onset of Sky Digital are pure, liquid shite.
Sky in the 1990s had a premium, exclusive feel to it a - as reflected in the idents. As it became a lot more accessible in the 2000s, it became just another broadcaster and Sky One in particular totally lost its personality. There are so many obvious examples of them trying to copy the far superior E4 and Channel 4 idents, and they didn’t get close.

Back in the 90s when I was in high school, I always felt lucky that my family had Sky One as it would show TV shows months before they broadcast on terrestrial TV like friends, i felt i was ahead of the game and loved satellite TV. Now decades on, I feel sky channels and TV channels in general are just old and nothing like streaming today. When I see TV channels, it feels like so old school.

Why on earth does the music of the 2011 idents remind me of "The Fear" by Lily Allen (love that song!). It's like they couldn't come up with something more original.

Swindon (Swindon Cable) was the first town to air Sky Channel, then Milton Keynes by one week. The original ident is the best. I am being nostalgic I know. The original ident brings up a lot of TV memories :-)

You got to remember Rupert Murdoch is Australian, Australian TV networks (9, 7 and 10) are very American in style. It doesn't really work in the UK which is why they dropped those early 90s program intros, or so I heard.

I remember when Cablelink started carrying Sky One (along with Super Channel and a few other weird ones) in Ireland back around 1991/92 when I was about 10 years old. It felt so futuristic and world-bridging...

The animated sky one varient from 1998 was used for the kids programming under the name animaktion

Nothing will ever beat the 1989-1992 idents. The style and the music made you want to be part of the SKY ONE world.

Will you be able to do Sky Sports Idents from the 1980s to present, please?

i can’t really see Sky as a company in any positive way anymore all because of that one asshole on Sky News who decided to publicly humiliate that kid who beat NES Tetris, saying she would’ve “taken away his Xbox-tendo and told him to go outside or read the bible because something as pointless as beating Tetris is nothing to be even remotely proud of” or something along those lines. I don’t even remember her name and I don’t want to, I want her to be forgotten.

I cancelled Sky a few years back so it wasn't until i watched this video that i found out Sky One was no longer around. I was aware of Sky Showcase but unaware it was it's replacement.

I remember the Sky Channel ident from the days we had Rediffusion cable in the 80s. And the '89 Sky One ident was fantastic, felt exciting at the time.

The 'tombstone' era though just encapsulate my teen years and having old analogue Sky until it all went digital.

Simpsons, X-Files, Xena, Stargate, Ibiza Uncovered (lol) ... Sky One was the business in it's day.

You probably know, but the 1998 version was the first digital one. They were probably more designed to show off the vibrant colours and sharper picture of your fancy new digibox, which would be connected up via RGB SCART, instead of the blurry RF or composite images that previous boxes used.

Note: Yes, I know that analogue Sky boxes had SCART sockets, I had 2 myself(1 of the original 16 channel variety and one of the later 200 channel ones) but even if you used SCART, it would still be outputting composite because that's the signal that was being sent from the satellite. I guess they were 'cause most British TVs didn't have composite in, except on the SCART socket.
