Sometimes Meshing Up Too Many Plots Mess Up A Good Drama
This was a strangely boring rendition of Exchanged Daughter's Revenge Of Her Entire Family's Deaths/Downfall. There is at least a dozen versions of this story of "FL who brought back her idiotic sister with the birthmark on her face who had been exchanged with FL since birth." FL was the smart daughter with the medical background but she knew from her first life how this family had stolen her from her family. In the other versions, the accidents caused to her family were not just explained away; the FL actually met with her injured brothers besides the eldest one, and there was a very good scene of reunion and family planning for revenge. In this one, everything seemed to fall on the shoulders of our FL without much rejoicing from her getting to see her real family.
PLOT
In the first life, FL, even though she lost out on her engagement to the Crown Prince, did the dutiful daughter thing and healed her newly-found sister's face. At her own wedding, she was killed by Crown Prince and 2FL but not before finding out that she was really just a village girl exchanged from birth. Once reborn after being killed by them , the FL brought back her sister with the birthmark before the former life's timeline, exposed the whole truth to her "parents" and immediately set out to make a birthmark mask for the girl so the Crown Prince would fall in love with her. The Crown Prince loved the "simplicity" (re: idiotic rudeness) of the 2FL over our FL and was disdainful of what he thought was scheming from the FL to get his attention (FL's plan).

The rest of the story was all about FL's plan to expose the deception by her father, to right the wrong of what her fake brother did to her real brother, and save the ML before he was injured and poisoned. The Crown Prince's love for the 2FL was tied to getting FL's family's military might, but FL managed to cut that off when she humiliated her adopted family, causing the father to lose his post. From then on, the Crown Prince tried to get the FL's support, since he'd stupidly married her off to the ML, who also had military power.

Everything was very confusing because the adopted family KNEW FL was their enemy, had cut her off from the family, and yet, they kept bringing her back into their fold over and over despite the fact that she kept winning every scheme they threw at her. She even had crazy kungfu skillz (when did she learn that?!) and wiped out all the adopted father's mansion guards! And still, they thought they could get her submit to their plans. It was just silly.

Then there was the arc of the Crown Prince not being the real one. He too had been a substitute for the real one who was some Venerable Monk hidden away by the Empress. Whuuuuuuuut. Throw in the arc of plague caused by fake Crown Prince and Birthmark Sister and you get a long-ass extra hour of needless political strife.

This story had a happy ending. It wasn't a bad drama, just that the script was choppy and written in so many directions that the viewer had very little emotional attachment to any of the characters.

Final Thoughts
A revenge/rebirth drama had to have an emotional angle in which the viewer choose to follow the main character through her ruthless choices of avenging all the wrongs done to her. In the previous versions, the prologue often showed how the FL was used by her family to heal her Birthmark Sister and then was discarded, how she was killed off when she found out the truth about her family and their evil ways. Thus, when she was reborn and started her quest, our investment in her revenge started with her first plan--bring out the sister before the family hid the truth from her. This part was NEVER really fleshed out in this version.

Everything the FL did was to avenge for her brothers' pain. Yet in this version, we never did see the arc of the broken brother reuniting with her sister. This was the emotional core of the drama, showing her anger at her real loss of family. Without it, everything that led to the Shen family's imprisonment was just all about the FL's foreknowledge and nothing else. The strange thing was, the confrontations were weirdly unsatisfying. We see the injury to the "brother" and all the humiliations and crazy shenanigans of the Birthmark Sister, but compared to the other versions where we meet the real brother, now broken and in a wheelchair, the fake family's misfortune seemed one-sided.

The ML was very supportive but was he even needed? LOL. FL seemed capable of defeating a whole army. As for the fake Crown Prince, his blindness at all the clues the main couple was leaving for him was sort of hilarious. One wonders at how he could even think of scheming against anyone. Truly, he and the 2FL were made for each other and should be Brainless Couple of the Year.

There were good moments in this drama. It would entertain many who hadn't seen many of the other versions, but truly, they should have just ended it with the Birthday Party arc, the Shen Family's humiliation, and the Crown Prince's discovery of the birthmark and finally, with everybody ended up exiled. Our couple could then galloped off into the sunset. The End. NEXT!

They really made this interesting drama boring. After the revenge, they were really supposed to maybe develop the marriage between the leads giving us a longer happy ending rather than wasting it on the chaos of war and epidemic. It was really really unnecessary. And i agree to what someone already said in the comment section, the FL really appears to have a sad face all through out the drama, a little bit serious face with laughter and smiles here and there would have been better.

Why ppl mix the wardrobe yellow & blue .... my eyes😅😅, she looks like Peddlepop ice cream...

This should be my 4th or 5th version of this storyline

I am really sick of people with birth marks being considered ugly though.. Even people that have very large birthmarks, it doesn't look like literal ash smeared on the face!

that they obviously did with this actress!, they took eyeshadow..and just smeared it on her face with a couple fingers ..

People with sparks are actually very beautiful, especially if the rest of their face is pretty, and they put special makeup on their other features, that can be very Beautiful.

I'm kind of tired of all the ugly birthmark, or ugly freckles, parts of these drama shows..

Freckles are very cute, and it is very rare to have a very large birthmark, and even those ,can be toned down with makeup, or you can just make your eye shadow extra special, and distract from the birthmark..

It's so silly not to date somebody because of their birth mark.. Especially, if the rest of them is fine.

If ya find the person, like this female antagonist villain, ugly, I understand...to not find them attractive.. Because they do have an ugly personality.

But I hope and real life people aren't thinking that freckles or birthmarks are ugly, dating's hard enough without those silly standards..

But if you're Asian and have freckles, try dating a Westerner

I've watched this trope several times but this is the first where I've laughed so much. The others had the adoptive family being sadistic and hateful AF, always trying to kill the FL. In this lighthearted version she keeps her foot on their necks from beginning to end. She and her lovely ML are meticulous and work together so well to make sure all their bases are always covered and let nothing slip their control. I love that immediately upon rebirth she didn't waste any time in finding her man and taking care of him and he in turn trusted her implicitly. Between all the intrigue and danger, they remained steadfast in their love and trust in each other.

As for the family of fools, good god almighty but she did a number on them with the help of the hot mess that is the real daughter. She was so ridiculous that I just couldn't hate her and her dumb a$$ prince was an abject failure in every way. And my petty heart giggled at the torture she subjected the creepy brother to. I also cackled every time the poor emperor went into apoplectic shock. The poor man was on the verge of a stroke every other second. This was a fun watch.
