Nice stuff! Where is he now? we haven't heard much of him lately.
ОтветитьHe seems to be fully immersed in conducting his chamber ensemble, Ireland Camerata.
ОтветитьThis is a great performance of Mussorgsky' masterpiece that was heard mainly in the orchestra arrangement before. After a big splash made by Barry Douglas at the 1986 Tchaikovsky Competition, many pianists (incuding Russians!) started to perform it.
ОтветитьThe recording that turned me on to Pictures. 2nd only to Horowitz's recording. Vladimir improvises on the concluding chords of Great Gate of Kiev, and it is SO much better than the original version. The random shots of Russian people, by the way, are hilarious!
ОтветитьGreat piece!
Ответитьhe's my new favorite pianist
ОтветитьI still remember coming across this video (the entire competition) on PBS one cold Sun morning in Idaho. I was mesmerized and this performance was a real high point.
ОтветитьI cannot believe this was 23 years ago!
ОтветитьHe makes the piece seem so powerful. Playing like that must make his fingers hurt.
ОтветитьI watch for the first time the live performance as was in 1986 when Barry Douglas performed Muggorksy Picture at an Exhibition. A pianist i thought we wold have heard much more of. He is missed by me as he was someone whom thrilled an audience.
ОтветитьA crime that the CD is out of print! Can't anyone post the full performance here?
ОтветитьWith hands like that he'd have made as good a goalkeeper as Pat Jennings! Not sure if Pat could play the piano though.
