FYI, Cornish Cross chickens can be raised much the same way as any other chicken, allowed to free range from early on, and they will, the ONLY thing that MUST be done differently, is how much you feed them, so that they don't become overweight in a dangerous manner. If the Cornish Cross is allowed to free range from early on, then it will be more difficult to estimate how much to feed them, because you will not know how much it had to eat already when foraging, BUT, if you keep the Cornish Cross housed, without access to any feed other than the one you provide, then you will know for sure how much to feed it so it will remain in good health, and doing so, you could even raise them to reproductive age, and hatch your own Cornish Cross once the hens start to lay, around the 6th month. Keeping a small flock of Cornish Cross until reproduction age and beyond is not expensive at all, they eat pretty much the same amount as a medium sized chicken, and another beautiful thing about the Cornish Cross breed is that they will eat all the feed you give them and will waste none, and will leave none around for rodents, so that in itself is a great benefit in keeping the area rodent free, and no feed spoilage. I forgot to mention that the hens are great layers, not fantastic, but great. Care must be taken to make sure that the hens do not eat their own eggs, because if given the opportunity, they will. You can also cross a Cornish Cross with other regular breeds, and the offspring will be a very meaty bird for sure, this way you could improve the meat production of your regular flock with some Cornish Cross blood.
