In a lot of german bakeries ( especially chains) they also have an upcharge for eating there. ( It is mostly between 20 to 50 Cents I think ) But you get ceramic plates and cups (and is a difference in tax i think? Please correct me if I am wrong) and the upcharge is for cleaning the plates and cups and the space and to buy new ones if one breaks.

I find it so interesting that based on the shorts I’ve seen japan is known for not having public trash cans and people don’t eat while walking, but you also have to pay slightly more tax to eat in at a restaurant. it’s such a different food culture to have take out be basically the only option especially with so much tourism

We have a dine-in tax here in Ohio. Takeout isn’t taxed, groceries aren’t taxed – those are seen primarily as activities to feed yourself, whereas dining in is seen as a leisure activity. Paying for food, vs paying for service and/or renting a space to eat.
