I have read a testimony in internet.
an American Chinese who grows up in USA and has American education but speaks Mandarin with his family.
I don't know how he learned hanzi.
Once he had a chance to work in China for a year.
After a year, he returned to USA and passed Hsk-5 easily with score more than 200.
Then he tried Hsk-6 but failed.
He still passed listening part with score more than 60, but only 40-s in reading....!!

In European languages, we often listen to people who pronounce words incorrectly.
In European languages, tones and intonation are feelings and emotion matters.
In Chinese it can alter the meaning..
Slight difference in tones and intonation may produce different meaning....
I used to say that Russian is as difficult as Chinese with different terms.
Memorizing Russian grammar is as difficult as memorizing Chinese characters.
However, Russian learners usually don't practice how to pronounce every word precisely. Slight difference in pronunciation is still acceptable.
This might make Chinese can be mastered within 2000 hours compared to 1100 hours of Russian.

我很同意。永远不会说”啊啊!我学好了中文!“却是个完全没有问题的特点。跟眼前吊着一根胡萝卜的马一样,我们只能不停地往前走。生于忧患,死于安乐!

I can definitely relate to the "si" "shi" problem. Always had to show my phone to ask for confirmation on the price while studying in chengdu.

你所有提起的中文方面基本上是什么使中文变得这么很有意思啊! There's a "funny" connection between difficulty / struggle and beauty, no? 😍

It's about more than 80% of characters are pictophonetic characters which have two parts, part of meaning and part of pronunciation. So if you have learned 3000 thousand characters, you have enough words to read newspapers or books, and you can guess its meaning and pronunciation when you encounter a stranger character.

The part of the load words you talked about is very intersting. I am learning Japanese. The Japanese language borrows foreign words into Japanese phonetically, like computer to konputa, eleveter to erebeta etc. I am very annoyed with Japanese load words and can't help to ask why not borrow words in meanings and write in kanji, it's easy to understand the meaning.

Chinese is hard for many reasons, but the biggest has to be that the words all sound the same. Ok, I exaggerate a little. But Chinese has very few phonic sounds (compared to English, for example) so a lot of words sound the same or similar to each other. I find this makes Chinese words both hard to understand and memorise.

The traditional, and to much extent modern, Chinese culture, including language, started in ancient BCE era, Daoist and even
pre Daoist, with cosmology of basic concepts like yin and yang,
5 ekements, 4 seasons, qi (chi)
energy, etc that underlie and unify
the culture. For example, even old names for tones were divided into
groups of several yins and yangs.
Artistic writing, calligraphy, emphasizes the writer s and character s qi chi energy. 5---
there are 5 directions, musical
notes, generic flavors, etc.
Ms. Victoria is absolutely right
about unity of general culture
and language, especially Chinese,
which is more directly from a history of independent development, with less foreign
borrowed influences than many
other countries.
Xiexie and Spasiba to Ms.Victoria
Nushi!!!

Your video is so well done and extremely informative. I'm surprised that such a great channel doesn't have millions of views.
