Taibbi misrepresents John Kerry's words. Kerry was asked about how to deal with disinformation online, and he says, factually, that you can’t use the law to suppress that speech:

“You know there’s a lot of discussion now about how you curb those entities in order to guarantee that you’re going to have some accountability on facts, etc. But look, if people only go to one source, and the source they go to is sick, and, you know, has an agenda, and they’re putting out disinformation, our First Amendment stands as a major block to be able to just, you know, hammer it out of existence…”
So in context he's just saying that disinformation is protected free speech. He's NOT saying he's against free speech. Taibbi is the champion of disinformation and lies.

The first time I went to China many years ago, I was walking around Beijing one night when it occurred to me, even back then, that China was everything that the American elites wanted to be in terms of surveillance control of its people.
