I tried the part he talks about giving a buck the wind. An my dad thought I was crazy for doing it. But It was a spot that I have had a scrape every year an I was always hunting it with wind in my face below the scrape. An thinking out side the box I said let's try something new. I let the wind blow from my left shoulder to my right side with the scrape below me at 20 yards of my left shoulder. Had my back to the pines an mountain Laurel edge an scrape was just on the edge of the hardwoods in front of me to the left side. To the right side of me is a rock bluff that I knew deer traveled the top side.the buck came in from the left side an walked right under me on the logging road that led to the rock bluff. He gave me a 15 yard shot with my bow. Unfortunately I hit a limb an it deflect my arrow just under him. But I'm sure it was going to check the scrape an head to the rock bluff scent checking with my scent blowing in between them an into his face. The deer made a loop below the scrape once I missed an if he didn't pick up my ground sent he was going to be down wind of me at 20 or 25 yards an travel the to of that bluff. Unfortunately the following year we lost the property to the owner selling it after hunting it for nearly 15 years. Changed the way I looked at scrapes an especially if the set up simulator to this property.
ОтветитьIf I move midday bc of wind change/thermals, if it's peak rut I'll do some grunts and actually run/drag my feet the 15-20 feet to my stand. Gotta get up quick but that's called in a buck within 5-10 mins more than it hasn't
ОтветитьI've hunted north GA for bear for years found alot of bear and almost never see whitetail ever
ОтветитьIf I don’t see a deer for a whole day I usually move I always think the grass is greener at the next spot then often I regret it and realize the first spot was best
ОтветитьAppa-what?
ОтветитьOnce your father gets 65-70 you will be the one reminding him to pick up his feet.... payback time lol
ОтветитьAs a guy who only hunted in the Ozark it always interesting to listen to y’all talk about pine thickets and laurels. Cause I have no clue what those are.
ОтветитьHave you guys ever talked with a hunter from Florida? I’d love to hear about that
ОтветитьSay it with me
App uh latch uh
What episode has the OK hunter? I'd love to hear you talk to some Texas hunters!
ОтветитьThis sounds like mountain deer hunting in central Pennsylvania. Laurel everywhere and you can go 7-10 days and not see a deer. That’s why I hunt farmland lol. I did kill a 148” typical 8 on a logging road on a high wind. I spent days in this stand this year because I knew big bucks use to check for does. All day sits in the rut are important too
ОтветитьOk I’ve heard you and others say that white oaks produce acorns biannually and red oaks annually but according to research and my observations it’s the other way around?!😳
ОтветитьNeed the topic of .... "Neighbors dogs running deer off my property day and night" 😂
ОтветитьYou can’t emphasize enough how much milk weed comes into play in higher elevations
ОтветитьYaKnowWutImean
ОтветитьThis was a great show, that dude is a beast, makes alot of sense with his tactics but I ain't climbing those mountains lol,I hunt not far from Uwharrie nation forest and we got some big hills that whoop me lol
ОтветитьGreat show. One of my faves in last 3 years.
ОтветитьWhen you are hiking over a mile in, and you get that big buck... How do you get it out?
ОтветитьAll the big hitters hunt in different ways or styles but they all kill big deer year after year. The only common denominator is they all walk and scout almost year round.
ОтветитьI like this guy .. we are hunting the same way...
ОтветитьTo make this video even more fun , everyone should have to take a drink every time he says “youknowwhatimean?” 😄
ОтветитьLove this channel!
ОтветитьI mean a great Episode!! One of the best no doubt! Great job guys!
ОтветитьDamn I live in hayesville
ОтветитьOne of the best podcast I've seen or heard in a long time. I hunt in northeast Georgia on the Chattahoochee national forest. A lot of the stuff he's saying really hits home with me. I can verify what he's sayin.... The mountain deer are a whole different breed. Every deer harvested is a trophy.
ОтветитьVery different in northern Ky
ОтветитьWish I know what his concoction is he mixes up for scrapes to get photos!?
ОтветитьGod where has this information been my whole life. Any appalachian hunter worth his salt knows that the deer on the big mountains are absolutely a different breed of deer. They are so hard to hunt, they have literally every advantage over you. If you’ve got a big mountain that runs down in to some ag fields and rolling ridges, the deer in that bottom and the deer 3/4 ways up the mountain act very different. My step dad and his brothers have killed some massive deer in the Alleghanies where I’m from, step dad got 1st place for the western part of Virginia. They taught me all I know…But one thing they have never been able to do for me is articulate these tactics like this guy, this is going to be on repeat for me for the next couple days.
ОтветитьI really enjoyed Ryan.
ОтветитьI do hate cameras. What happened ro hunting by just the sign? Now its a video and you know hes there at this time every day now instead of just the luck nature provides with the skill. Running a trap line of cameras? Crazy to me i guess. Sure it takes skill to get in there but you have love footage teling you to either walk away because hes there right now or to go in because hes not there yet but you know he will be soon. It really does make you seem less skilful as you speak to be.
ОтветитьI love this. I hunt some gamelands near Franklin. I’ve hunted in WNC all my life but in places with more deer. Learning to hunt the more western side of WNC is crazy
