TRUCK CAMPER vs. CAMPER TRAILER - Pro's & Con's from a FULL TIMER

This is a great cuestion. I would rather have a trailer, even if its a teardrop, in case of truck breaking down, especially if it's not a problem that will be fixed in a couple of minutes and you have to leave the vehicle in the shop

I have had many different RV's over the years..mostly class A coaches from a vintage 83 BlueBird Wanderlodge (pictured on my page<<<<<<) to a gas 97 Bounder to a 35' Toy Hauler to a 25' Fleetwood Wilderness travel trailer and after all those I think I want a van camper...but alas, class B's are $$$$ due to popularity...I would REALLY love a truck and truck camper like you have/had..but the whole finding a capable truck that is not $45K and a decent used truck camper under $10K is hard..at least here in Fl anyway..truck campers are sky high!! So I think I know I do want a smaller set up that is all in one such as a van..I can get a cargo van then have a raised roof added at Fiberine for maybe $3K and stand up...that seems the logical best choice as I will have a small home base in AZ so I won't be carrying all my life with me on trips..I'll only be escaping the AZ summers!

Great video man. New subscriber and really appreciate your vibe, your honesty and general thoughfulness in your reviews. Just calling out what you call “overland style travel” is really what people need to hear as they’re thinking trailer camper vs ftt or bed camper.

Regarding maintenance, truck camper will wear out your trucks rear wheel bearings and suspension faster than a trailer, due to more weight on the axle. suspension upgrades may be needed to make the truck able to handle the weight off road.

I really like a Camper Van and have 2 of them.

What is the difference is your mpg between the two options? I am leaning towards the truck camper with the idea of never taking it off. The plan is to hit the national parks in the West and get off-road on BLM land. I loved your video on the Kimbo truck camper and am comparing it to the Scout Olympic.

For me...if you get a truck camper, that's all you can use your truck for. It won't fit in the garage and im not sure my HOA would allow it parked on the street. I've got an order in for an off road teardrop...to pull behind my jeep.

I am a new subscriber to your channel. My wife and I have only used a tent for camping. I do not have a truck or a camper yet. I don’t know what I want yet. Can you recommend different models that I should look at which ones do recommend that I avoid? I am planning to go look at some today. We are planning to buy for weekend use. We have no experience or knowledge about trailers or truck bed campers yet. Thank you for your input.

My point of view you are a little safer in the truck camper and no matter what lifestyle u live there are expenses associated with living hopefully one day I will settle down and live a sane life

I've never towed anything but after watching some of the campers in my area try to maneuver their trailers into tight spots (most are larger trailers) it really does not appeal to me. We have a 4Runner w a RTT currently for weekend trips but I think we will go new truck and truck camper sometime in the future for long trips. Thanks for the vids, I enjoy watching them and getting all the lowdown on the various setups and whatnot. Keep it up breh :)

Just sold a 13 foot all aluminum Livin lite camper and bought a truck camper. I haven't used it yet, but I will use it more for going skiing and not having to stay in nasty hotels.

After watching & listening to this whole video it seems like a 4x4 high top conversion van camper is the way to go. I'm kind of surprised you didn't talk a little bit about that in comparison also.

Great comparison. One other bonus for a truck camper is it's much easier to pull a boat with. You could tandem tow a camper and a boat, but that probably really sucks.

The easiest way to turnaround on a small dirt road is to parking very much to the side, unhitch the trailer turn the car and turn and hitch the trailer. Safest and often easiest

Had my A-frame trailer for years. Did a over under axle lift and 33" LT rared AT tires. Been to Alaska and back. Goes anywhere my truck on 37s can. I wouldn't trade it for a 4wheel camper.

We're going from ctc to truck camper Scout.

I haven't seen every video, but I have seen the end result jeep with the camper on it. I don't like it at all. This dodge and camper is amazing, puts that jeep to shame. I have and F250 diesel and would never buy a jeep, or go smaller, I think it's time for you to dump the jeep and go back to a full size truck and another flat bed pop up camper. Just say n. Only my opinion. I am going to get my 1st pop up truck camper, getting the F250 ready for one now. Pretty excited.

Sub'd. Travelling from my region requires some long highway/interstate stretches. Often, we encounter high winds. Keeping an eye out for a truck camper. I have friends who have tried every imaginable camp trailer,van, and truck. Understanding that no vehicle checks every box, the truck camper seems best for me. Edit: currently tent camping from a Tacoma.

I've even gotten worried about being able to turn my truck around, some of the narrow tracks I've gone down in my life, just exploring. I would definitely do more planning and pull back from just following my nose, if I were pulling a trailer.

I'm going with a little 6'x8' off-road squaredrop. Go anywhere I want, sleep in comfort wherever I stop, without any work. I can spread out as little or as much as I want. If it's just an overnighter, I can do all my cooking and cleanup without spreading out at all. Just throw the Coleman stove on the fender of the trailer and I can put a meal together.

I do like to set up a base camp and fish/hike/prospect for days or even weeks out of one spot.

Enjoyed the video. As you mentioned several times. These choices are personal and everybody has their own reasons. I've chosen the truck camper older truck smaller flatbed camper. I looked at everything out there including the trailer you're sitting in. I just do not want to pull a trailer. I've driven in all kinds of road conditions and yes there's a trade off between a truck camper and towing a trailer. But my experience the truck camper was better on road ability. If that's a word. I am not a four-wheeler although dirt roads seem to be my main travel method. 95 Toyota T100 rear wheel drive extended cab now a flatbed. I did keep the pickup truck bed. It's a shorty and made it into a trailer with the original topper and liner. My camper is a pop top. It is self-sufficient solar. Everything inside is electric no propane, composting toilet, very basic and simple. And yes, the camper stays on the truck 95% of the time. Not as simple as it might seem to remove and replace. Certainly not a one person situation
