Suzerain was among the best games I played in 2023, which is really something given that I played two Trails games, Sea of Stars, Super Mario Wonder, Like a Dragon Gaiden, and an Ace Attorney duology.

Played the game after your last video and played the DLC right after. They are both great games, although with the base game I was struggling a bit with the balancing act, while in the DLC I just couldn't stop winning. Every treaty and financial investment I made paid off, I got to reunite the entire country and form most of the big alliance in the end. I was in good relationship with every nation other than Lapia and I was swimming in money, influence and so on. The only thing that got me was the person I put in charge of investigating the king's death decided to lie to me at the end for their political gains. Honestly if I played the game again I'd probably just do what I did before but commit harder to it, like getting Rumburg to buy all their energy from me and all that.

I also wish the resolution to Zille and Pales didn't come at the exact same time right at the end. I wish I could use the resources from one of them to bolster my actions on the other. Same with the ending feeling like it came a bit early. I wish we'd get another chapter where at the end we get to swing our Rizian big club around and influence more of the global politics. Would be a nice payoff for getting a strong victory...

But yeah, it's still a neat game and I'm looking forward to what they will come up with next...

I believe Rizia was meant to be much shorter than the base game but it eventually ballooned to a size that nearly rivals it. Torpor didn't reveal the price until the very end as well and I wish they could have been a bit more confident in terms of pricing. This franchise is the only time where I went "the devs should have charged a bit more"

In terms of modifiers Rizia is indeed really harsh. The diversified economy is extremely hard to get, you need projects, current budget and energy reserves, AND rate of those resources increase to match during a specific check to work, and on the flipside certain green modifiers actually have drawbacks (i.e: overwhelming power projection increases coup chance)

This DLC is worse than the base game, and the coup ending is extremely unsatisfying and makes no sense. However, it also has many fun features, such as turn-based strategy war, a beautiful OST, and unique mechanics

I liked the expansion as well, but I found it extremely easy in comparison with the base game. Sordland was a political minefield from which you had to position yourself perfectly to end up on the top. In Rizia, internal challenges can be entirely neutered by investing in industrial developments in all territories, which is something you'll want to do anyway to improve your economy and energy production. I managed to basically get almost all of the game's objectives perfectly and never had to touch the war mechanic at all, just by using diplomacy and beefing up the economy.


The strategy/management improvements are very welcome though. It was annoying to see the base game giving you only vague clues instead of clear information, such as the "economic growth" simply being a colored line that goes up or down. Unfortunately the balancing isn't there yet, but at least integrating this feature didn't damage the quality of the writing,

Thank you so much for your video review of Suzerain. I bought it on Switch and later on steam because of your recommendation and enjoyed it.

Also, if anyone is curious, the switch version of Suzerain has good controls, no bugs in my 20+ hour playtime and gets updates as soon as steam version does. The only drawback is that the Rizia expansion has not come to Switch yet.
I hope the sales on steam are good so that developers put Rizia on switch as well.

I can't wait for them to fix the bugs related to Rizia because it's just such a interesting DLC to play, i also wish there was more ways to supress the revolting population.
