The pipeline track in Donga Gali, located in the Galyat region of Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, is a popular hiking trail with a fascinating history. The trail, often referred to as the "Pipeline Track," runs along the old water pipeline route that once supplied water to Murree, a nearby hill station.
Early History
The origins of the pipeline track date back to the British colonial period in the early 20th century. During this time, Murree was developed as a summer retreat for British officials seeking relief from the heat of the plains. To supply water to Murree, a pipeline was constructed, sourcing water from the Dunga Gali area in the hills of Abbottabad district. This pipeline followed a route through dense forests and rugged terrain, stretching over 4 kilometers (about 2.5 miles).
Construction of the Pipeline
The construction of the pipeline was a challenging feat given the difficult mountainous terrain and the need to preserve the surrounding environment. It was built using local labor under British supervision, following a relatively flat gradient to ensure a steady flow of water. The pipeline remained in use for several decades, serving as a critical infrastructure element for Murree.
