"What Design" was established at the end of 2011. Our basic philosophy was that we wanted to use a variety of materials and formats to implement our creative ideas.
Design Concept Description:
We wanted to utilize this material (coal) in a simple manner, in order to express our perception of it. This was our effort to take the natural resource of coal and form a discussion on human behavior. Contemplating whether or not we use natural resources the right way, and examining their unnatural properties.

Rong in Chinese means melting and fusion, and that is the core of the philosophy. 17 designers from different design fields (product, furniture, fashion, jewelry, textile, porcelain, photography and graphic design) deconstruct the traditional craft of Hangzhou and apply them in contemporary design.
The final product focused on 5 Chinese traditional materials (bamboo, silk, mud, copper and paper) , and exhibited around the World from 2013 to 2017.The material of 2015 is mud.
Mud in Chinese has a lot of meanings. It is porcelain, brick, roof tile, sand, soil, clay, stone, mineral pigments, mud houses, incense, lacker, even Chinese food tofu or rice cakes.
