http://patreon.com/thorium Thorium is plentiful & can be used to generate energy without creating transuranic wastes. Thorium's capacity as nuclear fuel was discovered during WW II, but ignored because it was unsuitable for making bombs. A liquid-fluoride thorium reactor (LFTR) is the optimal approach for harvesting energy from Thorium, and has the potential to solve today's energy/climate crisis. LFTR is a type of Thorium Molten Salt Reactor (Th-MSR). This video summarizes over 6 hours worth of thorium talks given by Kirk Sorensen and other thorium technologists.

THORIUM REMIX 2011 starts with a 5 minute TL;WL summary, to hold you over until you find your Ritalin. YouTube Closed Captioning is available in English, and many other languages.

Q: What is thorium and what makes it special?

A: Thorium is a naturally-occuring mineral that holds large amounts of releasable nuclear energy, similar to uranium. This nuclear energy can be released in a special nuclear reactor designed to use thorium. Thorium is special because it is easier to extract this energy completely than uranium due to some of the chemical and nuclear properties of thorium.

Q: What is a liquid-fluoride reactor?

A: A liquid-fluoride nuclear reactor is different than conventional nuclear reactors that use solid fuel elements. A liquid-fluoride reactor uses a solution of several fluoride salts, typically lithium fluoride, beryllium fluoride, and uranium tetrafluoride, as its basic nuclear fuel. The fluoride salts have a number of advantages over solid fuels. They are impervious to radiation damage, they can be chemically processed in the form that they are in, and they have a high capacity to hold thermal energy (heat). Additional nuclear fuel can be added or withdrawn from the salt solution during normal operation.

Q: Are the salts safe?

A: Very safe. Unlike other coolants considered for high-performance reactors (like liquid sodium) the salts will not react dangerously with air or water. This is because they are already in their most stable chemical form. Their properties do not change even under intense radiation, unlike all solid forms of nuclear fuel.

Q: What is nuclear waste and how does a liquid-fluoride reactor address this issue?

A: So-called "nuclear waste" or spent-nuclear fuel is produced in conventional (solid-core) nuclear reactors because they are unable to extract all of the nuclear energy from their fuel before they have to shutdown. LFTR addresses this issue by using a form of nuclear fuel (liquid-fluoride salts of thorium) that allow complete extraction of nuclear energy from the fuel.

If it was all that great, why is there still not a single reactor that keeps running on Thorium? Those that existed were all closed down again shortly because there were too many problems. You need to constantly refill Thorium to the reactor and get the used stuff (that was found to be more dangerous than anticipated) out again. Because you do that with a very hot, salty liquid, the problems with corrosion were too big. What sounded good in theory showed it was unsustainable in real life.

Great book by PhD nuclear engineer Robert Zubrin: Merchants Of Despair.
Shows the Nazi, Malthusian & Darwinist roots of the anti-nuclear "environmentalist" crowd.
Shows their nasty depopulation tactics. Shows how fusion has been buried under bureaucracy & underfunded to keep it always 30 years away. Written for the layman.

I'm all for the LFTR but what do you fellow boffins think to Small Modular Reactors by Rolls Royce? Assuming LFTR isn't going to get done (it's not been done in all the years I've been following it) My engineer friends (not nuclear engineers but engineers none the less) haven't heard of it!... Would you prefer to have a less efficient nuclear power plant than no nuclear power plant? Or do you think pushing for something like LFTR is worth the wait (in which potentially no nuclear Reactors are built?)

Wow. How the US policy falters.

What a waste throwing away trillions of dollars of tax payers money for nepotism in Iraq and Afghanistan and loosing the edge for research and development of LFTR to China based on US research done 60 years ago by cutting the funds for such technologies. Supporting these will make world a much better place to live. Hope this will be coming to life whoever succeeds in realizing it. If China makes it good for humanity and what a pity for USA to delay it for 60 years and make wars on others oil resources in Middle East or else where shedding blood of so many people. Spare the money for such project that make such greedy wars obsolete.

Kirk has been talking about this for well over a decade. The same talk repeated over and over but nothing changes. There are so many Thorium research projects going on through the world from the Australian desert to the Norwegian snowfields and for well over two decades since they revived the Oak Ridge technology. There have been many steps forward but we still hear the same old story. They just keep on brushing over the same old problems and the use of Uranium in the process, etc. Why ? Why not stop lying by omission.

SCIENCE LIES.
Covid19 was created by SCIENTISTS, though "gain of function research "
At the beginning of the pandemic, SCIENTISTS told the public the "wet market lie".
SCIENTISTS condemned SCIENTISTS, who said COVID19 was from "gain of function research ".
Now SCIENTISTS want to spend BILLIONS on Mars exploration.
In the 60's, we fell for the useless Moon shot.
We can't afford this Mars craze.

Kirk Sorensen is right. It is time to use Thorium 233 as a nuclear reactor, as thorium is far cheaper than plutonium 235. Thorium 233 is the future if the Earth wants to rid our planet of fossil fuels. NOW is the time, as I believe Rolls Royce has already built experimental smaller and cheaper portable Thorium reactors for use in cities. John eric Hoare. British deep seaman retired.
