Ive watched many videos and actually done retrobriteing. Ive watched and experienced many contradictory results. I've heard claims that using the 3% peroxide that comes in brown bottles works on things like keys or mice. This has never worked for me, even after leaving the keys in the solution for over a week. Ive heard that heat is a factor. Just a few days ago (2-6-23) I successfully retrobrited a C64 case when temps were in the low 30's!
ОтветитьI just ordered a beat up old commodore 64 online, and am watching this to see some of the things I might run into if it doesn't work.
Ответить코모도 짜증남 ㅡ..
ОтветитьYou might be wondering "Why a Commodore 64?".
To which the proper answer is "Why the hell not?!"
😂
my hero!
ОтветитьHi 8-bit Guy! You gave me the motivation to get my own C64! Its a German C64G modell. I started to restore it, but the problem is I could not figure it out whether it's yellowed, or it is this "dirty white", little bit brownish color. So I don't know if i should retro-bright it or not. It is definitely not yellowed tough. It is hard to figure it out from pictures. Can you maybe help me with this ? :)
ОтветитьJust picked up our first commodore.. now time to clean it!
ОтветитьJust like everyone is else... except Adrian XD That guy has so many spare parts!
ОтветитьHey there. How many times can you use the same hydrogen peroxide before it stops bleaching the plastics. I have quite a bit and I'm planning to buy some and want to buy the right amount.
Also what percentage do you use and what concentration with the water?
"It's probably gonna give me cancer"

"OK, let's get started"
😂
Rewatched because YT recommended and I love the resto videos, and a thought occurred about the plunger, why not just take the carbon contact off and use a long and thin enough screw to rejoin the broken plunger pieces since it looks like there’s enough room for one to fit without interfering with the carbon contact from what I could see on the video.
ОтветитьRaid Over Moscow. OMG... One of my all time favorite C64 games. Going to play it tonight.
ОтветитьI love the random irrelevant anecdotes like the car washing bit. For some reason the mysterious thumb-print gave me a belly laugh when you revealed that the culprit was... you. LOL
ОтветитьThe new plunger will probably be better if you upsize it by maybe 2% or so. Your brother's 3D printer might also need calibrating.
ОтветитьI really enjoy your channel. Brings back so much nostalgia. My first computer was a CoCo 2. So amazing how far computers have come in even just my iPhone. Thank you for the stuff you do and show.
ОтветитьThe "Commodore" and "Power" faceplates are not damaged in this process with being submerged in the peroxide?
ОтветитьGreat video. I just got two of these from my oldest brother and I intend to follow the same cleaning as you. I was the master of the C64 back in the early 80's. I was the only guy to even have an SX-64...portable. I am looking forward to reliving my past. Thank again.
ОтветитьSatisfying
ОтветитьUV penetrates clouds fyi, also, look into the UV lamps used in aquarium anti-bacterial systems. Also, may be some aluminium foil around the outside of the container to allow for reflection on non perpendicular areas (to the lamp).
ОтветитьI feel like going in a mission saving some C64s where I live now
ОтветитьGreat resto, love the C64 :)
Ответитьcool
ОтветитьRegarding the spots in front of your garage: That’s why (e.g. in Germany) washing your car at home is illegal as all of that chemicals end up in the wastewater cycle. We need to go to a car wash station that has wastewater treatment for doing that.
ОтветитьWhy does the title of this video in my language says Commodore 64 canteen and new method of color recovery? Probably change your translator to Czech language for someone else :D
ОтветитьBack for another watch. Recommended this and another of your videos to a young person who shows promise. This is still a favorite, what with Alpha Centauri B in the background...
ОтветитьAMAZING. REMARKABLE SKILLS YOU HAVE.
I ALSO DO SUCH WORK. LIKE REPAIRS, BUILDING CIRCUITS, AND EXPERIMENTS BUT I LEARNED SOME THINGS FROM YOU, THAT I NEVER KNEW BEFORE.
Could you use an aquarium heater to increase the water bath temperature
ОтветитьLoved this post. Many years ago like in the late 80's I had a C-64 and cassette drive connected to my TV. I had a lot of fun typing in programs from the then magizines , LoadStar and Commodore Gazette. anyway I joined several c-64 clubs and started a collection. By the late 90's I had a room full. Three SX-64's all working, thirty or more C-64s, C-64c's , vic 20's, c-128s and many many drives. I was the go to guy in my area to get parts and or repairs. Finally had to get rid of it all and donated it to an other collector. It took a small trailer, a horse trailer and two pickups to load it all away. I miss it dearly. I modifieda couple with two sid chips to get six voices. I even wrote some songs in six and donated them to Loadstar who published them making me kind of famous. for about a week.
ОтветитьI did this for my my school when I was 10. Did I wanna deal with other children during recess? Nope! Rebuilding C64 keyboards and copying bootleg games made me a popular nerd before it was cool.
ОтветитьI thought this would be one of your earliest ones!😅
ОтветитьI use vaseline for lubing rails. I find it doesn't dry up like wd40.
ОтветитьInstead of good will I will take donations.
ОтветитьIt might give you cancer buttttt it could also give you a third hand
ОтветитьIf you know about retrobrighting, then this video should be helpful. (Even for C64 Fans)
ОтветитьWhere does this retrobrite word come from? It makes no sense and isn't a word. All you're doing is bleaching the plastic.
ОтветитьLove this video. Been following you for a long time. The Commodore 64 is near and dear to my heart, and since I have at least one to restore, the retrobright technique show here will be useful. One thing I’m curious about is how you think those printed key stems worked out in the end?
Ответитьfun fact: baking soda is edible in small quantities, and tastes sour.
ОтветитьKnow this is an old video, but I have question when it comes to the mixture of water and peroxides. How much water and how much chemical do you use? How strong peroxide do you use?
Ответить4 years later i know but 3d printing parts is going to become a reality for stuff like this.
ОтветитьYou know it's cold out when you go outside and it's cold.
ОтветитьFor cleaning/bleaching sun yellowed white plastic, I too found the translucent storage bins from the hardware box stores essential for this type of cleaning operation.
I've found, rather than diluting or buying low percentage peroxide and placing the translucent storage bin within direct sunlight, using straight 12% peroxide is by far optimal or best! If you have pets that might get into the peroxide, can drape clear plastic cling wrap over the top, taped to the sides of the translucent storage bin while sitting within direct sunlight.
I never tried synthetic UV lighting, figuring natural UV sunlight would readily outperform synthetic UV lighting.
I also avoid using ammonia on any plastic, as ammonia residue seems to increase UV damage. I prefer removing all electronics from the plastic casing, first wash the plastic with a safe degreaser such as Dawn dish washing liquid, then subsequently bleach the plastic. I avoid using any alcohol. Albeit, minimal spot cleaning with denatured alcohol, as well as lightly sanding with 1000/2000 grit sand paper is likely OK when needed.
Imagine it in a mirror tank.
Ответитьmight get too involvwved ,nut how about plasticc weled
Ответитьwhat does he do with all these old computers after there restored?? Old Computers are worthless and useless
ОтветитьWarmth does accelerate the UV activation, but you cannot get the sheer amount of UV light out of the sun a setup like this can put out.
