Unsolicited Review: Charles Tyrwhitt Shirts - Are They Worth It?

Hi Chris, some years ago I found myself becoming frustrated at the price and quality of shirts from mens outfitters. They were either made from man made fabric ar mixtures thereof, not very well cut and, of course, cheap, or on the other hand I could get higher quality shirts of pure cotton, linen and well made but very expensive if buying in quantity. Then I discovered Tyrwhitts while browsing online. I found Tyrwhitts to be quite well made, good collars for a tie and the double cuff option an attractive offer.
While they are not top of the range they are a safe bet when the need arises for buying a number of shirts for office siut wear and not too demanding on the pocket.

Excellent content, Chris. I recently purchased one of Charles Tyrwhitt's custom shirts and was amazed at the level of personalising detail available on their website. As shown in this video, the on-screen custom menu options are so easy to use. I experimented with various alternative colours and styles before finally committing to buy. I have yet to come across any other high street shirt supplier that matches the level of customisation offered by Charles Tyrwhitt. As a full bespoke shirt is beyond my budget, I found this alternative very acceptable in terms of both quality and price point. 👍

Excellent choice Chris. You look great! I bought some Tyrwhitt shirts when I lived in Australia and they were/are magnificent. They offer great quality at an unbeatable price.

I discovered Charles Tyrwhitt shirts around 4 years ago. I buy of the rack and be extremely pleased with the quality, do not shrink, 100% cotton, easy to iron and the great fit. I like the big variety of fabrics, designs and the possibility to choose your sleeve length. Chris, we seem to have the shorter arms in common. I am 5 feet 10 inches tall and need a 15.5 neck, 33 sleeve length. 34 is already too long. These shirts are the best I could find so far for a day-to-day usage. In the meantime, 80% all of my shirts in usage (around 20 at the time) are from CT. Another 10-12 shirts are in storage for later use. I always try to buy it when they have bundles like 3 shirts for $99. They shipping for such orders to the US is affordable, $15 with tracking, delivered in one week.

I wear some of their merino sweaters as well. They are so-so in the quality. The cuff seams are a weakness and need some restitching from time to time. Otherwise, they are holding up and can be worn for a couple of years. I will need to replace one or two at the end of this Winter season. Chris, do you have a brand recommendation for thin merino wool sweaters worn over a dress shirt? It can be UK based.

I bought a flannel shirt from CT a year ago. I was a little disappointed as the fabric was thinner than I expected for a flannel. I did buy a 3/4ths overcoat which I guess some call a car coat from them for my birthday & it was pretty good. Felt like good quality wool & although it came with plastic buttons (not made to measure so couldn't change that) I liked it

I've been a happy CT customer for over 15 years. Quality-wise, they've never failed me. The key thing, for the buyer, is to get what you want at the best price. And that means learning their discounting strategy. If you're not applying an offer code, when checking-out, you've not learnt enough. Another tip: don't chase Avios points, by going through the BA site. You can't get Avios points there AND use an offer-code - and it's the latter that is more valuable.

A friend from the UK recently came to Cape Town and gifted me a Charles Tyrwhitt shirt, amazing quality and so comfortable probably the best one in my wardrobe.

I just bought that exact same color/pattern shirt, through their custom shop for about $100 USD. This is my second shirt from them. I like the non iron fabric feel, and wrinkle resistance. I recommend them. However, a couple of things that I have found. 1) Its semi custom. Actual custom would be made to measure. You can't choose shoulder, chest, waist size, nor length. Due to having a tall muscular frame I am unable yet to get a good fit without my tailor doing some work on them. About $10 USD for my tailor to do this. 2) The monogramming is a very large font, too bold. 3) In the USA (or perhaps UK/EU) you may wish to consider ordering a true custom shirt from a online Company called "Proper Cloth" it will run about $110-120 USD. It may take you 1-2 times to get your fit perfected but they will remake it for you for free.

I have to agree. Tyrwhitt shirts are consistently good. I've used them for years without complaint and appreciate the ease with which you can ask for variation to sleeve length. Your observation about pricing and taking advantage of deals is spot on.

As a guy who had always suffered with the sizing of off the rack dress shirts in the pre-internet days, over the years I was propelled to order multiple rounds of bespoke shirts from a brick and mortar shirt maker which were just amazing. I have also gone through a pile of fairly expensive MTM quality shirts from Brooks Brothers.

Regarding Charles Tyrwhitt I can say I have a high degree of satisfaction and have been a multiple repeat customer over the last eight years. I tried two dress shirts and have ten casual in standard sizes (not the mtm "custom'"models), and am waiting for my newest batch of four to arrive this very week. Are they on the level of bespoke? - of course not even close. Are they as high quality as Brooks Brothers? No, but they're way cheaper and actually fit me better. Tyrwhitt shirts are pretty good for a consumer level shirt. Here's why I like to buy and wear them:

1. They have an array of standard sizing options that work pretty decently for me. Not perfectly, but not bad either. I'm sure the sizing customization shown in this video would be even better.

2. They look fairly good with decent construction, and have a great choice in fabrics, colors, styles, options etc.

3. While the fabric is definitely on the more 'economical' side, it is decent enough to hold up and look good through many wears, washes and ironing's, i.e. color fast, shape retention, stitching. I'm still regularly wearing those from eight years ago. Only lost 1 button.

4. The price and value is terrific. Four decent looking and fitting shirts that you can use for years for around 200 or less sounds good.

Honestly, if these shirts had lasted only half the time I would still buy them again. I think Charles Tyrwhitt serves its market segment very well. Merry Christmas to all.

I've been buying shirts from Tyrwhitt for quite a few years now. Good quality and a decent price. I'll definitely have to try their custom service!

Great presentation. I never realised a custom shirt with all those details could be specified, so thanks for the review. I have worn CT shirts over many years, from a classic fit 19.5 down to a 16.5 slim fit to match my fitness improvements. I have found them to be good quality at a reasonable cost and keep coming back to CT for formal shirts. Their stores are great as they enable you to try on 'off the peg' shirts to check fit before purchase. A shame other shirt manufacturers and stores have let their 'quality' slip over the years.

Good evening Chris, I have used CT Shirts for many years and there are a number of reasons! The quality is always good, Having shorter arms I always take advantage of the option of sleeve length and specific design throughout. and of course they are great value , especially when there are offers on.

Brilliant video Chris. I will certainly take up that recommendation. I reminds me of a web-site I visited not long ago, except it was about suits. It's called iTailor. It might be worth looking at that site and doing a review on them. I would be very interested in seeing a review on them.

I have been part of the CT family for the last 16 years. The quality of their shirts, shoes and tweed Blazer were excellent 👌. No regrets so far and I will always recommend them. Thanks Chris for your excellent review 👍.

Sizing is the pain - slim, classic, different sizes

i enjoy CT shirts for general purpose shirts, can get a decent fit for me, if the collars were a touch longer theyd be even better but oh well

Cheap rubbbish that doesn't last

Thirty five years ago CT was excellent; the equal of any of the ready to wear Jermyn Street shops. Then they became successful and moved manufacture abroad and cheapened the price, the cotton and the standard of make. It’s what always happens sadly.

Good stuff Chris! I think you should do more of this! I pretty much wear CT dress shirts exclusively, apparently I'm a weird shape so the ability to choose fit, collar size and sleeve length is invaluable to me. Also, can't fault their quality, I have several shirts that have been with me for several years, numerous washes and still going strong! I haven't, as yet, tested their custom service but you might have persuaded me! ;-)

I have been buying CT shirts (and not only shirts) for more than 10 years now. I am super happy, never had an issue with them! Nice material, easy to iron and very customisable. Highly recommended!!

I Wear nothing else 5 years plus. Get fits right, trial and error, when you have that right, then off you go. 😊😊😊

I have been getting adverts for CT shirts online and decided to look into them a bit. Your video came up in a search. I found your video to be excellent and very informative, the video comments are also very good. Showing the shirt while wearing a suit and tie was really great, it gave me confidence in the product. Also appreciate your talking about value for money, very useful.

One area I have experienced a problem with in the last 10 years is how quickly the inside of shirt collars wear. I dont recall this as being as being as much of a problem 20 years ago. I shave every day but only get a year or two out of a collar wearing a shirt once a week.

When I need any garments I check CT first, usually with a discount code ready. Almost all of my business & casual shirts, a couple of suits, sweaters, hybrid jacket, socks belts you name it! Fits me without alteration. Very reliable.

I have many Charles Tyrwhitt shirts and I like them. I think they might need more variety regarding casual shirts. I like your way of presentation. Keep up the good work!

The TM Lewins here in the PH closed down and were replaced by Tyrwhitts. How different is the quality and price? I loved my TM Lewin shirts so I am hesitant to move to a different brand

The answer is YES. CT are renowned for their shirts but all of their clothing and accessories are good quality at reasonable prices. There is a CT shop in the Oxford Westgate Shopping Centre. Well worth getting on their in store customer list.

Long time wearer of CT shirts - more than 20 yrs. They are no longer my first choice. I don’t like the stretch fabrics and the more diversified fits. IMHO they had a better range in the past when they only had traditional pure cottons and concentrated on only classic and slim/tailored fit. Their pricing is no longer honest and straightforward, nowadays it only makes sense to buy with an offer, which leaves you wondering what the true value of a CT Shirt is. For me therefore, quality/value proposition is no longer what it once was

American here. CT just opened their first store here in NYC a few months ago. I've only bought their shirts online but I'm eager to take a trip to their store. Thank you for sharing.

I tried their shirts after purchasing an umbrella from them. I got it on sale and figured I'm a little above average in weight (6'1" 230lb or 1.85m 16.4 stones), so I ordered regular fit. I ended up sending it back for a slim. Never thought I would wear that size. The regular fit leaves too much fabric under the armpit area as well as the abdominal area and it looks bad and too large. After dialing in the right fit, I have ordered at least 15 shirts from them. The quality is good and I can special order a certain size in neck, sleeve lengths. Always get them on sale and you can't go wrong. Never wrinkle, never shrink. I may go try to visit the New York store at some point.

When on sale for $39, the non-custom dress shirts are an awesome bargain.

The main problem with CT is once you’ve had 4 shirts or jumpers at their special price, you can’t buy one at the reduced price, unless you buy 4!
