Lord of the Rings - Gandalf vs Balrog [Entire Battle HD 1080p]

my dad would crap on about Lord of the Rings for so long when i was a kid, years later when i was in my earlier 20s we saw the movie together in the cinema, when that Balrog roared & the building felt like it was about to come down i finally got it

Gandalf always being badass, stood on business

Seeing this movie in the cinema as a kid is a memory I treasure. Had never seen anything so magnificent.

This or the reclaiming of Theoden are the two best scenes, and a close third to the battle at helms deep.
Good stuff.

The whole cast of LOTR...everything about the movies was just so fascinating...it has to the best ever!

What puzzles me is why Eonwe allowed Balrogs to remain in Middle Earth after the War of Wrath. He should have eradicated every single one of them before leaving for Aman.

What I love about this scene, and LOTR more generally:
When Jackson first approached McKellen to play Gandalf, he really was not interested. It just wasn't his thing; he felt it was likely to be disposable genre fare, and the time frame seemed too long. But he ended up changing his mind on it, partly because Jackson was so willing to adjust the shooting schedule to accommodate McKellen's obligations to "X-Men".
When McKellen took the role, he did not treat it as some lightweight nonsense. He did not treat it as though he was slumming it compared with treading the boards performing Shakespeare. He fucking COMMITTED. There is no scene in any of the movies where McKellen does not embody the role 100%. In a project of broadly fantastic casting, he is arguably the greatest casting of all. He is just PERFECT as Gandalf.

The strings in the entering music of the entire Ring cycle is, to me, the most amazing music human minds have ever made.

Guess the Balrog was a little upset and perhaps attention seeking..

If Olórin (Gandalf) had been in his full power, not reduced in his human/Istari form, it would have been an even fight since they were both Maiar "brothers".

Peter Jackson’s attention to detail is what makes this trilogy a classic that will withstand the test of time.

I remember going into the cinema, not knowing anything about this film, the novels or the lore, must have been in my late teens, and I was stoned out of my MF-ing nut! This scene, just absolutely pulverised my senses like nothing before or since. It was an incredible feeling!

Wouldn't the bridge have collapsed anyway given the Balrog's size and weight? He must weigh at least 20 tons.

I think it would have worked better if the line was, "What is this devilry?"

This entire battle makes ZERO sense and yet somehow we all just believe it like "yeah, okay". For example: did the Balrog just forget that it has WINGS?

this whole sequence is perfection

There's the amazingly choreographed fight scenes of Jackie Chan and Donnie Yen, there's John Woo's bullet ballets, there's Fury Road, and Dredd, and Terminator 2 and Aliens, there's the hammer scene from Oldboy, and the insanity that is Tony Jaa's work, and yet, I sincerely believe this is the best action scene of all time. It brings tears to my eyes every time I watch it.

The look on Legolas' face after Gandalf says it's a Balrog. You just know he's heard stories from his ancestors about how many balrogs have killed his kind in the first age.
