In my opinion, a solarpunk future is possible if the heads of the world start influencing this people's way of pessimist thinking, by promoting solarpunk ideas trough a new architectural style for example, if they start focus more on promoting ecological ideas trough art, music, lifestyle and other things like these. If we come with solutions for not having a depressing dystopian future, a new era, like Renaissance was for Medieval ages. We need a new mentality, and that's the seed from where everything will grow.

I say it kind of hard to make a compelling story based on a world with little problem. Thats why when good story arises they typically hail from flawed worlds. Me personally i cant really see much flaws in a solar punk society

Only when we reach the status of type 1 civilization (on the Kardashov scale), is when we can really start creating SolarPunk cities, since a type 1 civilization can really take advantage of the power of its nearest star, until then, most likely the cities will become corporate dystopias like in CyberPunk.

You know what will be interesting, a story where it features all 4 punk archetypes as 4 separate and diverse civilizations that continued on to survive a post apocalyptic world. Heck some places could even combine the tech of the 4 civilizations together, but is feared and rejected due to the 4 civilizations fighting for food, water, shelter, energy, etc. and in turn flat out reject other's philosophies and beliefs because it doesn't fit their own and/or gets in the way of their work and life. Would be an interesting world idea to explore and develop.

Part of the reason optimism is so hard to come across is because as you've identified, solarpunk requires fundamentally breaking from the capitalist system, that is eliminating the profit motive. In fact you can look at Cuba's urban farm infrastructure for a glimpse of solarpunk, although this comes more out of necessity from economic isolation than from a post-scarcity society. With every year and every capitalist crisis we hit more and more people become disillusioned with the capitalist system, so we are inevitably headed towards revolution. What gives me hope is that in this century our chances at world socialist revolution and putting an end to the capitalist system are better than they ever have been.

The problem with solar punk in America is the US vs them mentality when is comes to anything close to communism. And solar punk gives off communist vibes.

Now I'm not a communismist but there are some positive outcomes when people don't just write off certain positive ideology that support sustainable.

I'm tired of the Chobani hate. The founder is a muslim immigrant who quite literally had a whole TED Talk speech about worker's rights and being anti-capitalist. He has donated millions of dollars and billions of products to those in need, and is helping our efforts to aid Palestine as well. He's far more punk than you will ever be.

With all due respect solar punk the way you are describing will never exist simply because of the ethnically diverse point there, if you gang up everyone in a society, after centuries maybe millennia there wont be anymore diversity…. So i really dont get it why you would think such a thing would ever be possible… from a logical point of view the only way to have a diverse solar punk world is to have borders. And respect them.

When you mentioned solarpunk, the first thing that came to mind was the city from Appleseed (tthe 2004 version, anyway). But that movie also showed something that you mentioned: that the big city emphasis of corporate greed and individualism lay the foundation for cyberpunk, and Appleseed rides that line between the two.

As for the real world solarpunk cities, I think it's actually really cool that not only do they exist, but they are finding ways to remain sustainable! That's absolutely incredible! Thank you for opening my eyes to something that I didn't think would ever happen in real life

A solar centric society would be a key stage of development for humanity. With it, the punk animus would lose its vigor, and fade out. Therefore, architecture that would be based on solar budgets, and surpluses, would in fact lead to that ideal society.

Ironically cyberpunk came about as a warning and because the optimistic solar punk precursor was bankrupt. People became critical of the utopia that were being sold. Blade Runner was the birth of this idea that showed how over consumer destroys.

Wakanda was a fascist state ruled by a small group of families that ran it for their personal ambitions. The abrupt transition between human and natural environment showed how tightly the ruling class imposed its system on others.

The problem with solarpunk is that most punk's setting is evolved around oppressive environments. There is nothing oppressive about solarpunk, therefore it misses the point completely. Nothing to rebel against because "you already won".

This video being sponsored by a computer that would be unobtainable in a solar punk universe is telling but also hilarious. Its so cyberpunk to talk about small sustainable communities while repping a product that requires nature destroying resource extraction and exploitation of cheap labor, and global supply chains.

There's a show called "Scavenger's Reign" that perfectly depicts solar punk. The crew of a damaged deep space freighter are stranded on a beautiful but dangerous planet with intricate flora and fauna. They have to learn how to survive and live with this alive planet, often incorporating their futuristic technology with the nature surrounding them. It's one of my favourite shows - if you're into sci-fi/space/biology/insane animation then you'll love it!

What happens when a SolarPunk society faces an external threat? Let's say, a foreign invasion.

It it easy to predict what a CyberPunk society would do - poluting production facilitiles would mass produce weapons, the evil corporations (or the state) would arm men (and maybe women too) with these cheap mass-produced weapons, and the invading force would inevitably face some serious dificulties.

But would would a SolarPunk society do? Production is limited, extraction of resource is limited, population is limited, even the testosterone is limited. The invading force will crash it, and all its dreams and achievements will die with it.
