ah yes Medusa's curse one of the most debated tales of mythology , I spent some time doing research about it :

None of the versions we often are actually" true"( because obviously it's mythology) , it comes from the Ovid version who's unfortunately more known but was written by a Roman , and he was often biased in his writings , Arachne's tale is also a good example

The original version appeared way before this one by a Greek Hesiod and in it Medusa was born a Gorgon which means she was never cursed to be one and shared a bed with Poseidon willingly , she was never assaulted .

Athena got angry at medusa and casted a spell on her , turning her into a " ugly " monster with snakes for hair,
