I got a question Brent. I was recently thrown into a welding inspector position at my job. Been a welder for 4 years before this so I have limited knowledge in this position. Been learning alot though. The company wants me to give someone a 1" 3g plate test. The company is under AISC and from what I understand I wouldn't be able to certify anyone but I could administer the weld test then send off the cuts to be bent. Is this true?

Isn't this only when using a backing plate? So, in terms of an open root, as long as the throat from root to face is the same as the base metal, then it's acceptable as long as you don't have excessive root reinforcement, I.E. if I weld an open root on 1/2" material and have 1/16" root reinforcement but my underfill is 1/32" then my total weld throat is just over the thickness of the base metals and is acceptable
