Cellar and Cloaca Tour in the underground of ancient Roman City Augusta Raurica | Switzerland 2023

This narrow and barely man-high sewer in the ancient Roman city of Augusta Raurica near Kaiseraugst in Switzerland leads from the central thermal baths to the valley of the Violenbach and had primarily the task of disposing of the central thermal baths with their large water consumption. The various smaller inflow shafts, which were clearly visible during the inspection, show that waste water from private buildings, farms, road ditches, etc. could also be discharged here.
The canal was discovered and conserved by Karl Stehlin in 1911. After several decades of "sleeping beauty" it was provided with an entrance and exit in 1991 and is now accessible to the public.
One enters the canal at its upper end, that is, very close to the former central baths (at the end of the access stairs towards the right). Its construction is carefully made and excellently preserved: The floor - the canal bottom - is formed by massive sandstone slabs. The side walls are carefully joined with hand-made ashlars of limestone. The vault above it was built with the help of a hollow scaffold, which is still clearly visible by the board imprints in Roman mortar.
Two of the mentioned inflow shafts can be seen on the right, and four particularly large shafts at the top of the vault served as access and cleaning openings for the Roman canal workers.
Near the present artificial entrance, the original part of this imposing sewer has been buried. However, visitors can go left through a concrete passage and after a few steps reach a Roman cellar that belonged to a private house and had no structural connection with the cesspool.
This underground passage, almost 100 meters long, is very narrow and often very wet in wet weather. The visit is at your own risk: visitors with claustrophobia are not advised to visit. At the stairs is the entrance: the sewage tunnel can only be passed in one-way traffic (exit at the edge of the forest above the Violenbach).
