Star you know you can build stone and wood walls right? Stay on the wall after clicking should allow you to change types.

First and most important tips, change your "Restrict" setup put some "work" or they will stop work every time they want, is a good idea too in the later game leave some ppl work at night and other during the day, in case of an attack.
Another good tips is in the "Work" tab you can assign what they will do , as we have already seen it done, but if you look closely you will notice that some boxes have as the tears in, that means that the person has the talent for the job and then he'll learn faster.

Edit: I was going to forget, not build the structures in steel because you'll need it a lot, and there will not be enough, better to use the granite there in abundance, and as for the steel is immune to fire, NEVER use wood

you need to make zones for them to haul to, that's why they aren't moving anything.
