I absolutely love Gemma Chan but I'm so glad they replaced her with Zawe Ashton. Miss Ashton embodied the role of Julia Thistlewaite, along with Oliver Jackson-Cohen's Lord Cassidy, she was my favourite performance. This movie is so underrated! Instead of watching the 2022 botched version of Persuasion, check out Mr. Malcolm's List instead!

Just watched the movie. I had no idea Gemma Chan isn't actually in it and I waited the whole movie expecting her :(

The people dissing this as culturally inaccurate have clearly never seen different interpretations of other stories, such as modern day versions of Jane Austen stories such as Clueless (based on the Austen story Emma), or Shakespeare's plays given a new twist, such as West Side Story (Romeo and Juliet) or 10 Things I Hate About You (The Taming of the Shrew). The point isn't to be culturally accurate, the point is to tell an old story in a different way, Sheesh. P.S. The full version of this is now on Amazon Prime.

I saw the feature and didn't know about the short film until now. I was so surprised when I read Gemma Chan was originally cast. While I adore Gemma, the light comedic tone really translates with Zawe Ashton's portrayal.

They were slaves.
Just like a white man can't play Luther King. The Lord of the Age should not be played by a black person. The story is more believable if they make it a battle between the North and the South. The story is more believable if a servant falls in love with a black servant, but the white father opposes it. The blacks were slaves and not nobles, why don't they leave the original descriptions .There are black films, and before 200 centuries they were okay, but not during the time of Napoleon.
