Santa just loved the Barbary Coast. He would stand on the street and say, "Look! Ho. Ho. Ho."

Early San Francisco did have some rough times. I guess it won an Academy Award as a historically accurate film. There was a gang that bullied everyone until the city (really just a town) got organized and ended it. Although filmed in 1935, the wisdom of 1849 applies today; "Someone has to tell the people of San Francisco that you can't have a city without law and order." Thanks for uploading this wonderful old film.

Bette Davis must have been very jealous of Miriam Hopkins having turned some of the best performances of the 1930's.
Miriam Hopkins left an indelible mark on cinema especially with her earlier Academy Award nomination for the first 3-Strip Technicolor film, "Becky Sharp".
Miriam Hopkins was one of the most versatile Actresses in Hollywood and in the process was Ernst Lubitsch's favorite Actress.

Interesting movie. Fun to see how Hollyweird saw old San Francisco. Great acting, odd script, and nostalgic sets. The acting makes this flick recommendable.

Best performance by Hopkins that I've seen. "I grew up in a bell jar with forget-me-nots in my hair." I Googled it immediately and got nothing. McCrae explained who she was meant way more than her hardscrabble background. Hopkins and Robinson were both great in angry confrontation. Hopkins: "I wish I could tell you something that would make you howl and shoot!"

I usually pass on westerns. So glad I took a chance. Good film. Great cast. I doubt that a "white woman" would cause such a stirr. SF was loaded with prostitutes during the gold rush. Most were "white woman." Thanks for posting.

David Niven said in an interview that this movie was his "big break", where he's thrown out of a window and says "All right, I'll go." But I didn't see that scene anywhere in the movie. Let me know if and where you find it.

Seems like San Francisco has returned to it's roots of crime and more crime. What a great story and cast.

Good for the vigilantes more American cities might need them.

I was fortunate to track down a very used copy of Eddie's autobiography. He loathed Miriam Hopkins and apparently so did the crew, she was pompous and unprofessional. Interestingly, he said that the country's politics were so divisive that many movie sets became toxic. Sound familiar?

As one would expect in a Samuel Goldwyn film; excellent cast, crew and direction under Howard Hawks. Goldwyn made many films, financed them himself and released them himself, or through United Artists. After his problems with Paramount and Goldwyn Pictures (pre-MGM), he had no trust in the New York moneymen who financed the studios.

Was Walter Brennan ever young lol. Here it is in this movie 1935 and it looks like an old man. He must’ve had false teeth even back then, because his big smile shows no teeth at all in this movie. God bless Walter Brennan. He sure got around!

They only way they got rid of the corruption in San Francisco was with vigilantes. Governments and corporations were both corrupt. Sounds like history is repeating on the world wide stage today.

Hopkins was hard to work with. In his book - Robinson wrote that there was a scene where he had to slap her. Hopkins told him to really hit her and he did. SLAP!... Robinson said the whole crew broke out into thunderous applause.
