The cat I grew up with sometimes went away for a maximum of a week when she was mature but still fit physically. I once met her at night about 4km away from our home. She just greeted me and seemed to find it perfectly normal that we had met there.
When she became really old, she stayed at our home much more, died from old age at 18.
