I think Eddie actually drove away and left Charles on purpose, he saw his chance to get rid of him, I read somewhere that eddie was actually real scared of Charles, and was only a partner with him for the money they took etc, Charles was just killing for the fun of it, a complete sadist, and eddie was terrified Charles would turn on him eventually, so he took his chance which in my opinion is the real reason he didn't wait for him.

This was my favorite scene, you hear this you son of a bitch!!!!, I'm gonna get you for it!!, I'm gonna get you!! and I'm gonna get Eddie, no matter what!!!!

The way he say "YOU HEAR THIS YOU SONNAOFABITCH!!!!" Was especially epic lol Brad Dourif is amazing.
