I find it very funny, after living in the UK for about 6 years and writing at a UK uni for almost 3 years, that "Dr." or "Professor" is rarely, if ever used. It's seen as pompous and conceited. The only ones who go by "Dr." or "Professor" if they have the US equivalent to a full professorship. It comes up in meetings to congratulate people, but that's the only time I hear it- that or in announcements. They're just "teachers". It's made the arrogance of US teachers in academia very apparent.

Man, I still can't believe there's people who believe one country's army is Solely responsible for this conflict overseas when there could be evidences that prove differently. Like, it's just quite an important situation to be flippant about info(receiving/distributing) and, decision making as a citizen.. :(

Like, we're in a different country, people should know it'd be hard to know of something when we're far away from it and LOTS of things have happened (therefore we wouldn't know some of it, so) why are some so confidently placing themself on one side or the other right now?
Here feeling bad that peoples are going through a terrible time to begin with was my reaction.. not seeing the news and going "how dare they!" soon after.

These were fellow people were talking about not a bunch of serial criminals!(as far as we knew-)
& I don't see it as similar to wwii rn
ed: so so sorry about nagging this politics or whatever. Seeing that clip just reminded me of my feelings and not talking about it.. I'll delete this if you want

Personally I don't think 'self plagiarism' should even be considered a thing. I first heard the term in high school and it is still the single stupidest thing I have ever bloody heard in terms of can you or can you not use something. If it's yours, you own it. You're not stealing. Absolutely ridiculous and all around invasive and controlling for the purpose of ulterior motives on the part of external intruders. It will forever remain one of the most underhanded things ever conceived by the academic world.

I love how code was mentioned, but I'm like: don't care reuse as necessary. Typically because it's smaller pieces of a greater whole I imagine, and I don't personally find attribution all that important, other than maybe knowing the origin of historic algorithms and such.

One other aspect is just assuming bad intent for every instance. Academia feels.. well the people in it, feel like they take things a touch too seriously. Just a bit. It's only as big a deal as you make it out to be, and you make it out to be a really big deal. I'd argue potentially making some works worse. shrug

But ignore me, I'm very likely not going to be heavily involved in any of that culture, at least directly.

I work a Harvard bio research lab so I know the culture of “the Corporation” fairly well. We faculty and researchers here often say “Bureaucracy Over Brilliance” because the institution is run by incompetent academic frauds while the greatest minds in the country toil away in the dungeons.

To be fair, when I was writing my bachelor's thesis, I actually went to a friend professor of mine and outright asked him, whether copying structure of a thesis would be plagiarism. The rules were so... confusingly written, it could have counted. The one thing I'll never accept, when it comes to plagiarism, is self plagiarism. I don't care, that I used that precise sentence in the past. As long as I cite underlying sources, it has to be OK. It doesn't matter, if I did the work now or a year ago!

I worked for the IceCube Collaboration. One of the graduate students at another of our institutions (UC Berkely) quoted work that I did in his Thesis without giving me credit. Another student at my institution (Penn State) bullied me into giving him credit for work done by another (I didn't realize that's what he was doing at the time). both of them got away with it. Both of them have had better post-doctoral opportunities than I ever did.

You're right about Gay, of course. But on one of the subsidiary issues: You can't plagiarize yourself. You might lie to a pubisher about whether something has appeared before, and that is wrong, but it would serve no purpose for an historian of the Versailles conference to make sure that he never expressed the same opinion, or narrated in appproximately the same way, when presenting basic ideas in separate venues. He can footnote himself, of course, but footnoting or quoting every word, prefaced by "As I've said before"? No, no one wants that.

Unfortunately, the theft of ideas and research is not limited to the left and academia. They are similarly poached by "political celebrities" on the right, from diligent researchers who are kept under the lid for fear of exposing how shallow the inquiry into the left really is. We are doomed. Everyone is cheating, and in it for themselves and they don't care about the state of the world half as much as their own prestige, power and authority. They'd rather the world burn if they can save themselves from embarassment.
Looking forward to breaking a major academic scandal soon. Let's just say the entire network of review boards has likely been completely subverted... but at least ONE of the publishers (Sage) can be thrown under the bus with evidence. Perhaps, a right wing think tank as well - whose writer is a heinous, disingenuous data-thief.

The students at Harvard had every right to express themselves freely, and I stand with them in that right, but the plagiarism of Claudine Gay totally discredits her. She's a total diversity hire, sad to say. US Congress is showing themselves to be hypocritically unwilling to stand up for our 1st Amendment. For shame.

I will say, the most 'successful' students in my graduating class all copied eachother's homework.

I think the success of acedemia being hammered into highschool kids being based not on findings, study, and praxis, but rather writing papers upon papers upon papers created the false concept that your success is based on your writings and not on your actual skill and knowledge gained.

I can totally see this lead into a corrupt practice amongst academics who see volume of writings with your name on it = good.

For the wrongness of data falsification, fabrication, and plagiarism, I'm assuming that plagiarism is viewed as an acceptable evil as long as the world benefits from correct data, which is perhaps how scholars justify it. Whereas with fabrication and falsification, you would be a harming the world as a whole, and possibly opening yourself up to way more scrutiny, because people are far more likely to say you're wrong. The people who are fabricating or falsifying data probably already have no scruples against plagiarizing.

Anglo has been synonymous with "White" or "European American" in the western United States since the 1800s (even a Catholic Bavarian could've been considered Anglo)

Also, English is once again the most commonly claimed ancestry in the country as of the 2020 census

One thing I find endlessly fascinating is how a person's view of fairness in society is inversely proportionate to how lucky they are. Someone who gets everything handed to them from the cradle to adulthood, living their whole lives with a silver spoon in their mouths will be the first to declare that not only is society broken and rigged; but that THEY are the victims of said rigging. Yet, people who actually did come from nothing and worked hard to achieve every scrap of success they managed to get tend to view society as relatively fair.

I accidentally plagiarized once in college.

I was doing a computer programming (specifically Java) class final project and I happened to come across something online that was exactly the sort of project I wanted to make.

My plan was to look at this person's code, figure out how he did what he did, then essentially reverse engineer it and code my own version.

Unfortunately, when the deadline was approaching, I accidentally sent the other person's code instead of my own. My professor didn't catch it, and I didn't notice until quite literally years after graduation when I went back into that email to grab the code for a job interview where I was going to offer examples of my coding knowledge. My HDDs that held backups had died, so grabbing it from emails was my only choice.

Imagine my shock when I opened the code just to refresh myself on what did what in case I was asked, only to realize "this...this is not my work."
