Watching a huge amount of videos explaining vor and vor-dme, have the vortac in the thumbnail but don't say anything.....
thank you very much indeed!

So what you're saying is that the closer you get to the VOR, the less reliable the DME becomes since the slant range is at such a high angle? Unless you are accounting for that range, you could be a mile off the actual ground distance like your example.

It’s not correct
Terminal: from 0 to 14500ft and a range of 30nm
Low: from 14500ft to 18000ft and a range of 100nm
High: from 18000ft to 45000ft and a range of 130nm for the first part

The second part is from 45000ft up to 60000ft and a range of 100nm

I did an in person ground school earlier this year, and passed my written test with flying colors, but as I’m now back in training, I’ve forgotten a lot, and need all this as a refresher as I prepare for my check ride 🛩 Thank you for all the wonderful training!

Spot on. I did also want to add that very recently, they expanded the range of L VORs out to 70 NM from 5000' AGL up to 18,000', and H VORs to 70 NM from 5000' to 14,500'. This is due to the MON (Minimum Operational Network) program which provides navigation backup in the event the GPS system fails or is disabled.
