OMG! You just saved me a ton of time changing the oil in my small engines. I bet this could work for removing gasoline from ATV's, motorcycles, etc. too. Brilliant!!! Thanks a bunch

I worked at the Philadelphia Marine Center, and that's how I winterized boats and yachts. Great and easy method. Thank you.

Ya it may work just fine, but you don't get all the dirty particles drained out, which is why you are supposed to change the oil in the first place. If you drain it properly, you get all the dirt out too.

My soul cried a little seeing a nice Nalgene bottle used to collect oil! You're right though, they'll store just about anything.

Thanks for the great video.

Ingenious, but yet one more reason nobody with a city lawn needs a gas lawnmower. I have been using a battery mower since 2017,and have no maintenance issues with it other than charging the battery.

Unlikely you got all the contaminates. Given the color of the oil, there is likely sludge on the bottom that was left. I could change the oil in that mower 50 times by the time anyone finished making this apparatus

This is a great idea for those newer "never have to change the oil" lawn mowers.... because really, you DO need to change the oil regularly, regardless of what they claim. Unless you like buying new lawn mowers every few years.

I usually just tip it, not in the direction of the air filter. You can get most of the old oil to pour out from the fill/check tube. Just make sure to run it for a few minutes, so the particulates are in suspension.

Nice idea. But the reservation I have is contaminating the vac with organic/benzene volatiles (big no-no). (Will degass/desorb/pass from vac into atmosphere where the vac is used). Perhaps it's better to use a dedicated hand pump just for this use.

You can use this same type of system to cleanly fill your outboard motor lower unit as well. Put the vacuum part in the top fill hole and put another hose in the bottom drain hole into the new oil bottle. Turn that baby on, and when the oil starts coming into the Mason jar, you know your lower unit is full. I've been using this for years now. You're welcome! 😁✌️

I built one of these, it worked great until the jar fell over and sucked the oil into the shop vac ruining the bag and making a mess.
Then I went to Canadian Tire and bought a hand operated oil extractor. That works great.

I have to admit, I change the oil in my cars and motorcycles a lot. I think I’ve only ever changed the oil once in all lawnmowers I’ve owned. I had a Craftsman mower I bought new for like $99. It lasted 20 years and NEVER changed the oil. I did add a little oil ever now and then. She just ran and ran until one day she said I’m done.

There was only one mistake I spotted in this video: You never explained WHY you use TWO tubin's? doesn't the first one do the job just fine? they are both flexible, why add a second piece which does the same thing??

Or you could just let the engine warm up and tip the mower over to drain the oil.

This looks like it may also work on my Craftsman snow blower. The drain pipe on it is low and horizontal and things can get messy. I'm going to try this on the filler tube before I put the unit away in the spring.

Excellent idea, especially for these riduculous newer mowers that do not have an oil drain plug and must be inverted to drain the oil thru the fill hole. I’ll be making one for my small mower. But, it does require tools to make: drill, step bit, scissors, vacuum (j/k).

I just pick up my mower and dump the oil in a drain pan. Your method works better for riding mowers.

Or simply tilt your mower only its side and drain into a pickle jar with a large funnel.
