When it was a bit of freedom of Speech in the world

Thank you so much🙏 I come from Lithuania, a small country in the Eastern part of the Europe. In our history we knew very well what is resistance and fighting for freedom and human rights as we were living under occupation of the Soviet Russia (the threat is still here).
And what Mr. Edward Said spoke here is so relevant and known to Lithuanians.
He reminds me of my father who used to be a restless fighter for oppressed people, for justice and human rights.
Mr. Said's humanity resonates a lot with my father's.
Unfortunately, very often such brightminded people pass away too early.
They both will be missed🤍
In solidarity with Palestinians and all who struggle for their freedom🙏

After the attacks on Israel, I can no longer feel for the Palestinian cause as I have previously. Stories of an Israeli woman who was raped repeatedly, her breasts cut off and while being raped shot in the head. I cannot see nor feel for the Palestinian cause when it supports such hate. Children whose heads were bashed, and beheaded, burned alive ...I cannot support a cause that supports such brutality.

I was in the auditorium when Professor Said gave this incredible lecture. It’s even more relevant today than it was when he spoke at UC Berkeley.

I've watched a number of professor Said's speeches, interviews and I have a couple of his books on order. He seems to have been an extraordinary, eloquent man, and the world is lesser without him. But much as I'm sad he is no longer with us, it might be just as well that he is not around to witness the horror being inflicted upon his people with American backing.

Professor Said diagnosed the Palestinians' cause and their suffering as a medical doctor who knows the disease, its symptoms, and how to cure it.

Wow wow how great is this man! He was born in Palestine!! - I totally admire this gentleman’s lecture!!!

Professor Said's broad vision caused me to want to see a map w/ dates marking all of the countries that the US and/or its proxies have intervened/ invaded/ sanctioned w/ destructive results since 1900 and another timeline map marking all of the countries in which our invasions/ interventions have produced positive outcomes. i suspect that the latter would be close to the empty set - more's the pity for a country that appeared to have such high moral goals.

It makes me sad to think all he said is still true today ! In a way , it would have been too painful for him to see how much worse everything has gotten ‼️

My heart goes out to the Palestinian people who are still grappling with this ugly reality.

A significant speech. Thank you, UC Berkeley Events. Might I suggest informing viewers of the date of the speech, rather than the date of the video posting? This speech was given in February of 2003. Dr. Said died in September of 2003.

How I wish he is alive today and well, and give us his insight of what's happening in Gaza

16 years and nothing has changed. The crimes of Israel have only gotten more grotesque. Part of me is glad Said is no longer with us to see the current carnage in Gaza.

Edward Said is a Protestant Christian. He stood against the evangelical myth that Palestine is the land of the Jews, and he defended the rights of his people in American universities. He was AIPAC’s nightmare.

Zionism began in the 1880s. In 2024 Zionism is finally and deservedly dying, but as Nazism and fascism are always with us, so will zionism remain. Sapiens are a species that contains the gamut of behavior from best behavior to worst. Evolution is slow but a failed species is soon extinct. Love life while we/you have it?

And today on 24 May 2024, the iron curtain around Gaza has not worked. A wall never worked never works never will work. King Canut comes to mind. Global Heating Climate Emergency can be stopped by a wall also? What a sad species sapiens is.....

How many Edward Saids, Mandelas, and Gandhis have they erased? And even now, 23 years after this conference, how many are still being silenced? Their dehumanizing rationale—the claim that children, babies, and pregnant women of Palestine are future terrorists—has robbed the world of countless potential greats. How many of those children might have become profound voices, shaping humanity for the better? They have stripped the world of its thinkers, caring only for minds molded by their indoctrination, bent on the supremacy of race, ethnicity, religion, or ideology above all else. Shame!

Notwithstanding losing his place a couple of times, Dr. Said's forcefulness and coherence is as it always was. It is hard to believe that, just 8 months later, he would be gone. He left much of himself behind but, all in all, we lost a great deal on that sad day.

2024 and Prof Said's words remain so pertinent!
