Thank you for mentioning the book ending and not from the movie. Both are happy endings but the difference is men are doomed to never be content in Tolkiens universe as in our own. And Sauron can still watch and observe, he just cant do anything, but his spirit is still present albeit barely to the point of just enough to be there. I wouldnt say aimlessly wandering, but its been a while since i read the books maybe that is what Tolkien wrote. I do remember the shadow part though, thats basically what Sauron is regardless now

But if we're going the Dagor Dagorath route, Im fairly sure Sauron would return/be renewed albeit only to get stomped by the armies of Valinor

Frodo didn't cast the ring into Mt.Doom in fact he failed his quest and succumbed. It was the rings power to corrupt which ultimately led to its downfall as two corrupted individuals fought for it. Ironically ... the ring caused its own destruction.
