Professional editor here. I've been doing this since 2014 and it's definitely a legit opportunity that I'd recommend to anyone with a solid writing background. But bear in mind: while being a good writer is table stakes for being a good editor, the mindset for writing and the mindset for editing are not the same. You'll need to pivot mentally from one to the other (or between them if you do both), and that's not necessarily intuitive. You also need to sell yourself differently to clients---for a lot of people, an editor sounds like a luxury they can't afford, so helping them understand your value is a much more important challenge to tackle. It can be done and done well, but it's not automatic the way "I'll write your content for you" can be.
