Hey, I have experience on a Yamaha ttr 225 dirt bike, do you think I'd be ok starting on a liter bike, or hayabusa?

I like my bike on the quiet side, especially on long rides, but if I could flip a switch and make it loud, I'd have that system for sure. If motorcycle noise can make drivers look up from their smart phones for a couple seconds, that's all good.

I'm thankful that my bike brothers pulled me aside to stress the importance of loud pipes...just bought 2 bros exhaust for my ninja 1k and it's definitely a great reaction on how cars notice you on the road more...

Never really understood how this was debatable, there have been plenty where I've heard a bike coming up from behind through traffic. If that keeps someone from side swiping the rider how is that NOT potentially saving lives?

Agree! but personally I dont like loud pipes, I have a 2016 Hayabusa and I always ride with my high beams on and never, never ever ride on a car blind spot, I always try to make sure other drivers have a clear view of me riding beside them.

Some of the loudest sounds I've ever heard (except for a drag car) was from a Harley. I've literally heard bikes that were so loud that my ears felt like they were bleeding.

Loud pipes are cool but they don't help like people claim they do. You can only hear loud pipes after they pass you and you are behind them and for a brief second when they are right beside you, not coming at you head on or perpendicular. They are not going to help you if you're entering into someone's blind spot. You have to think about which way people are going and how sound travels. When it comes to car and motorcycle collisions the sound isn't going to be heard by the driver in any way that they would hear you with enough advanced notice to realize you're there and avoid and potential accident, especially with two vehicles traveling at speed. And just forget about it with some of the nicer cars that are well insulated and have a lot of soundproofing and the windows and music cranked up.

I think loud pipes definitely get your attention and are noticeable. My wife says she can hear me going up the road way after I leave the house. She opens the garage door when she hears my bike and I'm not even on our block yet lol

Or, instead of making all the noise, you could just walk around with a sign telling us you're a lowlife loser, desperately seeking our attention.

Whenever I hear a loud pipe I start looking around for the bike mainly just because I want to see it. Well when I'm in my car that is. On my bike I just make sure I'm heard

can anyone help me? I'm wondering if u break on a motorcycle.. for example.. ur coming to a stop on a red light.. I know there's different ways of stopping but my question is.. how do I stop? as in.. can I stop even if I'm in 4th gear? or do I need to forcly get to first gear somehow?

I don't get it. The same people that preach about how we're smaller and less visible and should improve our skills to avoid crashes (which is absolutely true), also say that loud pipes are useless. I think they overthink the simplicity of it because it doesn't take hours of zigzags in a parking lot figure out. Nothing is full proof but if you have two people on fz6rs (extremely quite bikes) and one has a full system exhaust. Who has a higher chance of being noticed downshifting up to the light? Or crossing an intersection or revving because some twit is about to merge into them. Please go ahead and tell me how everyone on the road is a granny blasting avenged sevenfold with 10 year old bifocals and is gonna hit you anyway.

No. Loud pipes don't save lives. A sharp mind saves your ass. I've been riding around this city with 2,000,000 people on 1,200cc's of muscle with no exhaust can and still have had distracted people. It takes me 40 minutes to go 10 miles at 25mph most and ever afternoon. 6 lanes of traffic and loud pipes don't save lives. A sharp mind does. No driver is responsible for your safety. You are, on a quiet bike or not.

People drown out loud noises even though they hear them, they focus harder on what the pipe noise is taking their attention from and that is where the distraction and mistakes happen. Everyone's experiences vary, but they don't. I remember once i saw this bike get crunched up at 65mph with loud pipes when a pickup truck pulled out in front of him. It was 92°F, the truck had his AC on. The loud pipes didn't do a damn thing to save that man's life. Big ol' Harley too, loud pipes. He flew over and skidded, opened his head. He was a greasy smear on the road for about 30 feet of blood and shit. Blood on the truck and frame bent forks twisted.

Loud pipes don't save lives. Wrong. You are responsible. With or without a loud pipes. You're invisible anyways, people don't see you and you don't occupy any space. One time i remember well this dude just decides to share my seat with me, with his car. i just look at him and shoo him away with my hand. He was pretty rattled, because even with 1,200cc's, no cat and a loud pipe, he never knew i was there. We were bookin' too, 80mph the both of us and at 5,000rpm on a big bike is loud.


Besides, loud pipes are directional. The noise is behind you. Any biker worth their salt will tell you that.

I currently still have factory pipes on my bike because I live in a condo complex and I'm in the only building that allows motorcycles and they gave me a super hard time about it. The building president even lied about it and said motorcycles were not allowed, and when I finally found out they were grandfathered into our building I brought up the fact that he fraudulently disbarred me use of my legal property because my parking spot is part of my deeded property. He backed off a little and said it was ok because it wasn't a loud Harley type bike. We don't get along, they day I found out I could have my bike I just parked it in my spot and he threatened to tow it. I told him "Anyone ever touches my bike, my wrath will be biblical in nature, hailing frogs and shit". I'm trying to move and as soon as I have another place to stay I'm cutting off my exhaust, and getting a service dog (they don't allow pets either) and I'm gonna make them evict me and I will fight it every step of the way. I hate my condo, it's full of ole timers who have nothing better to do than spend all day looking for stuff to bitch about. And I get blamed for everything. Someone broke the gate down, it's gotta be me on my motorcycle (which doesn't even make sense) and they have cameras, someone scraped another cars bumper, it's gotta be me even though I don't own a green vehicle, on and on and effin on.

I've tested this "loud pipe" theory while driving in my car.  The only way it has any effect is if the driver of the car has their window open and radio off.  This is a small percentage of the cars.  Then it is more likely to cause a startle reflex.

No doub loud pipes save lives. Loud car stereos save lives as well.

I've always modified the mufflers on my bikes to get the sound I want and don't really care to make the real loud. I want a low rumble for ME, not to get others attention persay. I do agree they may be heard easier to people in cars/trucks so it's a plus I guess. I don't agree that you have to spend large sums of money for after market pipes to piss off the neighbors however. Just a nice low rumble is what I like. And I don't need to get stopped by the cops because of my pipes. They're cracking down on noise laws anyway.

Do loud popes saves lives? Maybe in some (rare) situations. In general? No, loud pipes or not makes no difference.
The "Sound" from your pipe is not omnidirectional, the pipe points backwards and thats the way most of the noise goes.
How saves loud pipes lives by annoying the people behind you, if the real danger is in front of you?
In Germany you can see (hear) it every day on the Autobahn. Bikes or sportscars on the left lane with 125-150mph can you her in the moment the overtake you and then until they disapear behind the horizon, but you dont hear they comming.

No! Sound waves ride on the air. If your pipe so well when it faces backward then why don't police sirens, truck air horns, train horns and ship horns face backward? They don't because they are trying to save lives in FRONT of them. Ask why the now deceased owner of the Daytona Harley store died getting hit by a trailer being pulled down the road. He had loud pipes.

I drive a truck, and I hear a loud piped bike at the same point as quieter bikes, when it would be too late at my door. I have exceptional hearing. If you think loud pipes save lives, you obviously believe in error that acoustical physics is suspended for your bike.

If exhaust pipe jockeys knew what people thought of them, they would put a real muffler on their vehicle as soon as possible.

Firstly, the expression is 'I COULDN'T care less'. But more importantly, I'm not sure why you think that your safety (when indulging in a completely avoidable hobby) trumps other people's right to peace and quiet. It is possible to ride defensively, to minimise the risk to yourself. As for preferring to use your pipes to attract attention to using your horn, you seem to miss the point that the horn is only in when you want it to be. If you occasionally need to come home at 2am at night, you have the choice not to sound your horn to wake your neighbours. You don't have the choice to suddenly have quiet pipes. The fact that you don't care about this shows how selfish you are. Perhaps that's what living in the Land of the Free means. Having the freedom to upset other people because you don't give a toss about them.

Of course the rider can't hear the traffic around him.

The only guy that said sound is omnidirectional.. finally! It gets more directional when frequency increases but many bikes have deep exhaust notes or at least a deep component. It is exactly as he says, it might be louder in one direction but it is still loud
