Inside the Controversy Over Manhattan's Billion Dollar Tower

This is the brand-new Tower at 175 Park Avenue, a standout addition to Redefine Midtown Manhattan. This mixed-use tower, which rises to a stunning 1,581 feet, promises more than simply height; it is also a fresh engineering statement. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill designed the project, which will replace the historic but contentious Grand Hyatt Hotel and dominate the skyline while simultaneously improving public areas and infrastructure. But how does it reconcile modernity with the ancient charm of its surroundings? Let us explore this magnificent skyscraper and everything it has to offer.

Has anyone been monitoring the health effects of the additional radiation exposure that results from being in high buildings for prolong per periods? Pilots and aircrews have very elevated rates of cancers.

It is a huge tower at a time when people do not want to come in to work at the office, NYC is filled with crime, filthy rundown subway system, grimy dirty streets, litter everywhere, thugery, homelessness and drugs everywhere in pure daylight, less police to protect, and counteract crime, homicides, vandalism, etc, etc. NYC has lost its style, glam, opulence, it is nothing but a dysfunctional city that is mediocre infrastructure, police, rescue, emergency agencies, are reduced like never before. Why go ahead with this costly tiresome played out project. What is in it for the law abiding citizens that are poorer and run down, ignored, that are just trying to survive the violent, ugly jungle that NYC has become now in 2024 the 21st century.

the building’s beautiful no doubt, but its scale is absolutely unreasonable. the same with the new foster&partners skyscraper. why can’t we show some respect for the surrounding patrimonial architecture?? why does the chrysler building have to be so overshadowed by these new buildings?? i believe that “showing respect” to past architecture should go way beyond some slight design aspects. these new monstrous towers just don’t fit in the urban envoirement they’re going to be placed in

The building's design is impressive but its way to large, too imposing, and painfully close to the deco architectural icon, the beautiful Chrysler Building!!! The city planners should never have approved this behemoth unless it was to be built at a respectable distance from such a beautiful, timeless building that many would agree, still after almost a hundred years one of the most iconic buildings ever built!!! Shame on the city planning department!!! 😵‍💫😡😲🥺😱

If it's a Skidmore building it will be first class. I bet it will be very nice indeed. If you had to knock down The Chrysler Building to build it then it would not be a good idea. But it doesn't really seem like The Hyatt is, well, all that unique.

Developers are intent on obscuring the Chrysler and the Empire State Building.

In 50 years you may not even be able to find them on NYC’s skyline view. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Couldn’t this have been built somewhere else? Lower East side maybe?

Financial District?

It looks out of place and destroys the character of the area.

Eventually, you will have to build skyscrapers next to the Chrysler Building. At least its art deco style not a square glass box. Chrysler Building had its day almost 100 years ago. It had a good run.

If the Hyatt had retained the facade of the old Commodore Hotel, then there would be a good argument for keeping it. However, the glass skin completely revised the look, and made it totally anonymous. As it stands, it is no loss.
