I went the vegetable production route for my farm, but my best friend is a livestock farmer. While we are two different farms we operate as one unit when it comes to the marketing end of things. I really advise small scale farmers to team up and work together. It took many years for me to find someone I trust, but we are absolutely tied at the hip now. My buddy farms full time and I do it as a second job. He travels to farmers markets around my state (South Carolina) all week while I'm at work. I get a wide smile clocked into work knowing my buddy is somewhere in my state selling my veggies.
Teamwork makes the dream work. My children think grocery stores are just a place to buy pizza, that's basically how little we use it. I did break down and buy some potatoes for Thanksgiving, but everything else came from other farmers, right down to the cheese.
We are considering add a breeding pair of pigs next year... Most likely KuneKunes. Any thoughts on that?
ОтветитьGreat video thanks for sharing love the tour
ОтветитьHow do you keep the goats in? Also do you have a guardian that stays with them?
ОтветитьI would really like to see your channel grow. I try to let all the ads run.
ОтветитьHave you thought about mowing your pastures to keep the tall grass down and add carbon to your fields and build the soil. The best height for the grass for nutrition is about 8-10 inches. And try over seeding with some type of clover
ОтветитьI too have a small homestead on 20acres. It's all about systems in small spaces. Right.
ОтветитьWhat state are you in? I may have missed it but with the smaller lowlines what kind of stocking rates could you maintain per acre if you had to?
ОтветитьYou just got a new sub! We are on 20 acres, too, and trying to work our way to being more sustainable one step at a time. Your pigs are looking yummy! I need a donkey but can’t get one for scammers to save my life! We tried to grow our own animal food but that was an epic fail for the two crops! Hopefully I can learn from your channel! Cows are looking yummy too! 😅 I enjoyed the video!!
ОтветитьHi..are you using vaccines or dewormers for your livestocks? ..
ОтветитьWhat kind of cows are those? I like that they're a little smaller. I just have 7 acres that i purchased early this year. I currently have 2 pigs and 14 chickens. Id really like to do cows, but am somewhat intimidated.
ОтветитьThe space here is very wonderful, wish everyone a happy day!😊
ОтветитьI accidently bought 180 acres this year. So far I've only added a few sheep that I'm rotationally grazing. I'm in northern Missouri, so I was able to get my sheep from Greg Judy.
I like the way you've set up your pastures. My goal over the next few years is to get my perimeter fence in order. Then I can think about dividing it.
What state is your farm ? I looked at your video for the first time today.
ОтветитьDo you use goats for food or milk ???
ОтветитьYour ground is in desperate need of lime. That’s why you have so much broom sage. Lime is probably the single most beneficial thing you can give your ground.
ОтветитьWe have around 13 acres here in North Carolina. We’re in the eastern part around Fayetteville North Carolina. We have tried for several years to make it profitable but so far not so much. We have cows, UGGs chickens, yeast, ducks, rabbits one mule and three donkeys. We also do Pastor raised chicken. Our problem is we don’t have time for farmers markets or anything else like that.
ОтветитьYou really need to lime your fields to get rid of that broom sage.
ОтветитьCan you do a video on your farm equipment and tractors if possible
ОтветитьJunk? Junk??? Dude that there is your hardware store!
ОтветитьNot a good video
ОтветитьWe're standing up a little operation on our 8 acres. Getting a few bred heifers for us and we're putting hogs in our 180ft barn.
ОтветитьGreat video. I bought 43 acres this year and am in the process of trying to turn it into a farm like yours. It is a lot of work, but so enjoyable working with the animals.
ОтветитьTry to be as efficient as possible, don't let anything go to waste.
ОтветитьGreat content!
ОтветитьMy goal is to have about 10-20 acres, I would love around 10 acres of woods and 10 of farmland/pasture.
ОтветитьYou state you dont have hay quality pastures ? Then aim for just that. Not that difficult if you have the land ! Then....also apply fertilizer...... a 100- 80-80 works great. More then double the production ! Problem is....if it rains it will be difficult to keep up with the growth ! Primary......keep in mind.......you apply manure or the cows apply the manure it takes nearly two years before the cow will eat over that area again ! No different then if some one placed a pile of XXX on your dinner plate. Only difference is......cows smell is about 50 times of what ours is. It has nothing to do with decomposition. It still stinks !!!!!
ОтветитьNew subscriber, good info
Ответить20acrs. Rich
ОтветитьFor those wondering, I have put lime on my pastures. I put 2.5 tons per acre on the whole place last fall (the max application). Thanks for watching!
