Here we are again with a new vlog, the last one so far, about the fantastically impressive and green island of Corfu. In this last vlog I show you the most beautiful sights of the island. We start with not the least namely Corfu town. This place is Unesco world heritage.
Number 1: The palace of Sissi or the Achilleion palace. The Austrian empress Elisabeth or better known as Sissi, built this palace in 1886 and served as a tribute to her spiritual hero Achilles. 6 years later the empress was murdered in Geneva and the palace became the property of Greece after the German emperor Wilhelm 2.
Number 2: The old fortress of Corfu. The fortress was built by the Goths in the 6th century. But the Venetians made it a masterpiece in the 15th century by building defensive moats and walls. With this they were able to keep the enemy outside the walls.
Number 3: The new fortress of Corfu. The new fortress was built 15 years after the old fortress by the Venetians to protect themselves even better against the enemy. In this case, the Ottomans.
Number 4: The Palace of Saint Michael and Saint George. This palace was built by the British in 1819. The British ruled Corfu for 50 years. In 1864, Corfu was reunited with Greece and the palace served as a royal residence for 100 years. Today it is a museum for Asian Art.
Number 5: The Vlacherna Monastery. It is mainly the special location of the monastery that makes this place unique. Airplanes land nearby and fly over the islands. In the past, the island had the shape of a mouse.
Number 6: The Liston. Next to the beautiful green park De Esplanade lies an impressive building. The Liston was built by the French. The French also ruled Corfu for a while.
Number 7: The old town itself. In the small streets you will find many shops. It is easy to get lost here. Be sure to try the kumquat liqueur, a liqueur made from a citrus fruit. The church of Agios Spyridon is a church dedicated to Spiridon, a Cypriot who was often able to save Corfu from adversity.
Number 8: Villa Mon Repos. During the British period, Sir Frederik Adam built this villa. Later it ended up in Greek hands. It is nice to know that the British Prince Phillippe, the husband of Queen Elizabeth II of England, was born there.
Number 9: Paleiokastritsa. This village at the bottom of a mountain slope is located on a bay and is a beautiful picture postcard in itself. Here you can take beautiful boat trips along the rocks and sea caves, visit the monastery, high on a mountain. And the village of Lakones high on the mountain offers a beautiful view over the bay.
Number 10: Angelokastro. These ruins of a 12th century Byzantine fortress overlook Paleiokastritsa. The fortress was meant to send signals to Corfu Town if pirates at sea could pose a threat.
Number 11: Excursion to Parga. Parga is located on the Greek mainland and is a Venetian village by the sea with a large castle, several beaches, monasteries, restaurants and hotels. In short, an ideal tourist attraction.
Number 12: Kassiopi. Kassiopi is located in the north of Corfu and overlooks Albania. Kassiopi has a beautiful harbour with restaurants, a pebble beach surrounded by blue water and offers numerous walking opportunities. Most walks start at the ruins of an old fortress. The Romans Nero and Tiberius once called this place home.
Number 13: Drastis. Cape Drastis is located in a beautiful nature reserve. The chalk cliffs located vertically on the sea have their shape mainly due to wind and erosion.
Number 14: Excursion to Paxos. Paxos lives from day tourism. It is a small Greek island but of breathtaking beauty. The Venetians built a beautiful harbour here. Nowadays it is a harbour with mainly luxury yachts.
Number 15: Lake Korission. Lake Korission is located right on the sea and is a beautiful nature reserve. Here you can take a lovely walk in peace and enjoy nature.
Number 16: Canal D’amour. The Canal D’amour is, as the name suggests, the attraction for couples. Anyone who swims in the canal here will stay together forever.
Number 17: Perithia. Ano Perithia is an abandoned mountain village. There was little to do here and the last inhabitants left this village before the Second World War. There is still a church with frescoes.
Number 18: Agios Gordios. For beach lovers there is the beautiful beach of Agios Gordios.
Number 19: Sofrito and Pastitsada. Taste the delicious Corfiot cuisine. A number of delicious dishes based on a rooster and beef take the crown.
Number 20: Ginger Beer. The non-alcoholic drink was introduced to Corfu by the British in the 19th century. Nowadays, Ginger Beer is on every menu in Corfu.
