When I was entering college in 2012, they had us read a book called “full body burden” about the nuclear power plans in Rocky Flats, Colorado in the 70s. The book was full of legal documents about people and animals being born with horrible mutations, people getting awful cancers, people coming home from work wearing blood soaked masks because they’d been getting nosebleeds all day from the plutonium- all manner of awful things. It was well known that the radiation had gotten into the soil and the water, and I believe they did something like this in California as well. I must be the biggest conspiracy theorist ever, but it did strike me as odd when I found out that California and Colorado, two places with extremely polluted and irradiated soil, were the two first states to make growing your own weed legal. It was almost as if they were hoping the people who started growing it there would make everyone sick and they would have a reason to make it really illegal or ban it for good since they’ve never been able to find any healthrisks associated, but have been desperately trying for decades.

Tuskegee ended in 72, I was 7 years old. I remember hearing about friends of my parents having “bad blood”. It’s insane to know that I was alive when it was still going on.
