You can’t beat the older, all metal workhorses from Sears Kenmore and Singer. I find them all the time at yard sales and thrift stores for under $30. Many times, all they need is cleaned up and oiled.

My 'local' Joann's (45 minute drive to a city, oh well it's the closest place I can get yarn besides a thrift store) had Brother FB1757T sewing machines on clearance for $99.99 and I picked one up for myself to learn sewing with a machine. It's going well but I definitely need to get my hands on a sewing equivalent of a straight edge so I can actually cut and sew strwight lines 🤭
