Nice review! I read this book three years ago, when it came out, and I found it different (for better and for worse) than the author's other books I've read. Overall though, I think this is a solid book!

If you're interested in any non-magical fantasy books, that are technically YA, but still deep enough for older adults, appropriate for preteens (for the most part), and clean even by Christian YA standards, I recommend checking out Emily Hayse's books. Her books include:
- Crowning Heaven (A portal fantasy)
- Seventh City (An Arctic fantasy adventure): This one won an award and has a companion short story collection called The Rivers Lead Home.
- The Last Atlantean (A historical fantasy set in 1912)
- Knights of Tin and Lead Series (A western fantasy trilogy, that's a retelling of Arthurian Legends)
