The Jabulani guides recently came across this unique sighting. After hearing from one of the Jabulani butlers that a kill had taken place near the lodge, the guides went out to search and found drag marks across a nearby road. This led them to a hyena and her prey - an impala. The hyena called out and was soon joined by about five other hyenas. Within just 15 minutes, they had eaten the entire impala.
What makes this sighting so unique is the surprise about 47 seconds into the video - the impala had been pregnant. While feeding from the impala’s abdomen, one of the hyenas pulls out a calf. The calf is also eaten.
Not all aspects of nature are pleasant to see, and sightings such as this one may be difficult to look at. But all animals play a role in their environments, and all animals must eat to survive. Carnivores such as hyenas are vital to their ecosystems, as they control the populations of ungulates (hoofed animals) and prevent them from overfeeding and damaging habitats. Nature has a place for all animals.
