Citizen of the US here. That day, my wife, myself and our 5 year old daughter had just arrived for vacation in Amsterdam from California. We happened upon Dam Square as the original rally was taking place. The tension was so thick that my wife thought it was some sort of protest and was immediately very nervous. The chants sounded like a football game, so I said, "This can't be a protest, it must be a football rally." I asked a nearby officer and they confirmed this. Even knowing that, there was no doubt that the tension in the air was very thick and it felt like way more than a rally, more like a tinder box. Needless to say, we left the main square immediately, and moved to another part of the city.

That night, the rioting and explosions could be heard from our hotel and many of the guests woke up pretty shaken up from a crazy night.
