I've found putting up your biggest piece first where you want it to be, helps get you started. Usually it looks best off-centre. Then you can fit smaller pieces around it, perhaps to give a staggered effect. Then fitting even smaller pieces in between those pieces works, as long as the spacing between them all is even (more or less). I've also found that once you have 2-3 pieces up you can sort of eyeball the rest without too much stress.
