Sakurai Reveals Development Details on Sephiroth in Smash (One-winged Angel Mode, Trailer, & More!)

Does no one else take into account that Sakurai must be exhausted as hell between five years of negotiations for Steve and eventually overcoming copyright issues for Sephiroth?

Most likely, he and/or Nintendo may have picked at least one more first-party character in advance to make things less stressful for everyone.

Everytime a character is about to get announced, i always expect characters no one speculates about, expecting the unexpected, and that mentality always comes out on top

They really captured the feel of playing as a boss with Sephiroth, he always keeps his stoic look and poses.

It took five years but Final Fantasy after all this time finally got the rightful representation it deserved in Super Smash Bros with more music tracks, spirits & Mii costumes all thanks to Sephiroth’s inclusion

Sephiroth is the first villain from a series that wasn’t featured in SSB64

Now that we’re halfway through this fighter pass, I think things will wrap up by next fall at the latest

I kinda wish he used his sword more effectively (arching up-tilt, n-air using his sword in a circle, short hop f-air hitting standing opponents) and that his up-B and up-air had less landing lag, but I 100% understand why they don't function that way. He's still my favorite DLC character to play as by far and I love what they did with him and everything surrounding his inclusion

I understand Masahiro Sakarai's decision regarding the FF7 villain being the 1st DLC to be a full-fledged villain instead of heroes and finally making him a 1st DLC Lightweight Newcomer(While going against what the FF7 villain was known for in his own universe, it's been a long time since the game's launch date especially Isabelle used to be the sole Lightweight Newcomer that's not an Echo Fighters back then). But when it comes to FF7 representation before Sephiroth DLC, I still blame Masahiro Sakarai's ambition going way too overboard on a game that was developed for around 2 years before launch(Leading to the Character Unlocking Method being the absolute worst ever in Smash history as it is extremely outdated by today's standards & being a severe downgrade from previous games and "World of Light" being the absolute worst Adventure Mode in Smash history for many reasons. Those two faults of the game resulting in having one of the absolute worst paddings ever existed in gaming history which makes losing or breaking the Switch all the more scarier. Those 2 faults are also the reason why there are missing features in this game like Coin Smash, Smash Run from Smash 4 3DS which is sadly replaced by that goddamn "World of Light", no easy way to get boss spirits like Master Hand & Crazy Hand without going through that goddamn "World of Light" as of recent updates, and stages of previous Smash games especially Pokefloats, Pac-Maze, & Rainbow Road. At least Spirit Board gave us the option to get Spirits there compared to that unnecessary World of Light whatsoever.) and Square Enix's negligence on adding a bit more FF7 music & just the spirits of Midgar stage's Summons before Ultimate's release which leads to having the worst representation ever at a time before the latest DLC. Sakarai's overambitious stupidity on the Switch's limitations and Square Enix's cowardice on FF7 representation has been retarded back then, but now it is forgiven thanks to Sephiroth DLC. It's not perfect as there's missing spirits like Odin, Ramuh, Leviathan, Professor Hojo, Zack Fair, and Cloud's Advent Children spirit due to the lack of a clean artwork, at the very least the FF7 representation has been redeemed for the better.

Sepheroth doesn't have the longest sword in smash bros history though.
Funnily enough, kirby does. His final smash gives him the big super ability sword. On the final slice of it, it grows in size, so I'm like 99% sure that this is correct

The beauty of the Sephiroth Challenge was that my best time on Very Hard was 9 seconds using a character I never play as. I set it to Random for fun, got Meta Knight, used Side B immediately (which resulted in Sephiroth getting flung off-stage), followed Sephiroth off-stage, and then accidentally bounced off Sephiroth's head while trying to get back to the stage, which resulted in him not being able to recover.

I know people are mixed on people wanting eggman but although professor Layton and Sora are my two most wanted characters, dr Eggman seems like a really good choice, I mean he's the only other super iconic villain/mean character from a series that:
1: is NOT going to get the rating raised- so everyone wanting mortal kombat rep or doom guy maaaay have trouble getting that unless a mii costume as those games are high rated and practically require blood/gore to fit in (doom is easier due to older doom games having lower rating but I don't think people want old doom rep)
2: is already in smash- if you ask a common NON videogame fan about who dr Eggman is, I guarantee that most people would know him compared to some of these weird obscure ideas people have for characters (fawful for example from Mario rpg cool as it could be is WAAAAY too obscure to be recognisable to mainstream which most of the reps so far for dlc have been)
3- is the easiest to put into smash: Eggman already has plenty of moves and styles of gameplay he can pull from (sonic adventure 2 alone gives big moveset but also his range of machines weapons and abilities proves he can fight competently) not to mention his cartoony visual style fits smash perfectly and he has a big personality which sakurai could see being distinct from everyone else leading to
4- he can be very distinct from any other character in the roster, remember a big aspect to every smash bros character is how they are different and what they bring to the series, dr Eggman has mechanical weaponry something only a few characters (rob, bowser jr and snake have), mixed with a weird cartoony personality, with inventions from blaster cartoony guns to bombs to hover flight to robots and minions he could use as moves, there's a lot of creative freedom and he's the only iconic villain in gaming history that isn't here and is easier for people to recognise (m bison I would argue is close but less people know who he is and REMEMBER, only in the west is he M.Bison, everywhere else he is I think vega, I forget which but yeah for localisation and translations that will be a nightmare to get head around compared to someone more universally named, like Eggman, plus bison and his psycho powers potentially risk putting at higher rating and 3 street fighter reps seems WAAAY excessive compared to 1 sonic rep.
Only other villain I think would make perfect sense is shadow the hedgehog and because he has sonic's exact silhouette it's too hard to make him distinct visually, his moveset would be very different with all sorts of weaponry and styles and I would love him, but he's assist trophy as is waluigi so unless Sakurai surprises us, Eggman seems like only villain they would likely add.
...but this is sakurai so anything is possible and that's why smash bros is beautiful ❤️👍

Always wanted more villains especially in DLC.

Sephiroth wasn’t on the top of my mind, but I’m happy he made it in.

Maybe it's just my imagination but I'm pretty surprised how early they released Sephiroth. It felt like an eternity from the gap between minmin and steve but Sephiroth felt super early by comparison.

That's enough, I have enough sakurai to always choose fucked Swordfighter popular, All I want is rayman that's all, I give up, I will check octomber 1 2021, I do not want to know who is fighters 9, 10 and 11?, As long as I don't have Rayman, An now for the last time i want RAYMAN.

Kirby's Ultra Sword is bigger, as are Ganon's swords, and the swords in Kalos League. Byleth's can stretch to be much linger than Sephiroth's. Also there are some really big swords people made in stage builder. Nice try Sakurai
