Invisible fire is an absolute nightmare. Happened in racing as well, with methanol fuel.
Methanol burns with flame that is invisible in daylight, and a veeeeery faint light blue in the dark. And while it is not as energy dense as your regular gas that you pump into your car, it is still a terrifying thought that an entire pit crew could be engulfed in flames and the only thing you’d see is them running, jumping and flailing around.
If it looks stupid, but it works, its not stupid.
ОтветитьToday i found out that "spontaneous combustion" is because of hidrogen
ОтветитьBuddy
ОтветитьJust look around with a thermal camera?
ОтветитьYou would think infrared googles would work
Ответить"Fire pictured above" got me rolling
ОтветитьI mean sulfur is added to gas pipelines so gas leaks can be detected why isn't this done here?
ОтветитьBro, drop test that shit.
ОтветитьWouldn't thermal goggles be more practical?
ОтветитьIf it ain’t broke don’t fix it
Ответитьuse infraread device to see heat source? or does that not work?
ОтветитьCould just mix something smelly with the gas to make it detectable by smell. Like what they did with propane.
ОтветитьDoes the fire not also show up on infrared images?
ОтветитьIf my memory serves, it's one of the cheapest and easiest ways to detect a hydrogen fire (or any other fire that's not visible to the naked eye). If you ask me, it's not stupid if it WORKS.
ОтветитьWell lets see ... $10 broom or $1 million research and instruments ($1000 thermal camera maybe?)
ОтветитьTbf. Since nasa has worked close with the us government they have gotten some goodies over the years.
Everything from old stationery/big night vision equipment to smaller helmet mounted stuff. It's not like they require top of the line resolution to spot something hot like a fire on a pipe.
And yes. Traditional image intensifiers can also spot hydrogen fires. Because they pic up some infrared but also other wave lengths we cannot see. And the us government has had a bunch of gen1 devices laying around. Meaning if nasa needed some, they could get a bunch.
You act like thermal imaging cameras aren’t a thing.
ОтветитьI mean, ethanol fires are also invisible. A mascaras driver once exited his car in a pit stop and started acting weird. Turns out he was on fire and it was an invisible fire.
ОтветитьWhat!?
Vat?
To be fair, thermal googles would work too, but simple cheap solutions seems far better. Having said that It might be worth it to invest in some thermal googles. Buying and replacing all those brooms, will eventually add up in price.
ОтветитьI saw a video of a race car driver on invisible fire (apparently Methanol burns invisible). Scary.
ОтветитьSo yeah, remember that time that WE HAVE THERMAL IMAGING TECHNOLOGY!!! HOW IS THIS AN ISSUE?!?!?!
Edit: I looked into it, and explanation in comments.
Brought to you by broom people is crazy
ОтветитьCheap, effective and easily obtained testing device. It's actually a very sound method as long they know how to put out the fire once they find it!
ОтветитьThermal imaging?
ОтветитьThermal image cameras can detect it, just saying 🤷
Ответитьtbf...you do the same with a high pressure air leak. Swing a stick/broom in front of you. If it breaks or gets cut in half.... grats you found it before you...well found it.
ОтветитьMy immediate response to finding an invisible fire was thermal imaging.
ОтветитьJust because it's simple doesn't mean it's stupid
ОтветитьThe hindenburg had garlic mixed in with the hydrogen
ОтветитьMan, the budget is massive. Get them a helmet and a thermal unit.
ОтветитьWouldn't it be simple to start bleeding in hydrogen sulfude into the line? That way we at least can smell rotten egg. Once it get to the designated area, seperate it using electrochemical splitting method.
ОтветитьInfrared?
ОтветитьWhy not heat goggles?
ОтветитьDo people not KNOW about Operation Paperclip? Where do y'all think we got wernher von braun from, Spain?
ОтветитьAvatar last airbender episode had a better way
ОтветитьFun fact: the broom is also how we used to detect high pressure steam leaks. If the broom in front of you suddenly has a hole in it, it might be best to stop going in that direction
ОтветитьI mean… as long as it works, I’m not complaining.
ОтветитьThe "broom method" is also quite popular at race tracks for detecting alcohol fires
ОтветитьDon’t tell they use cork as an insulator on rockets.
ОтветитьThe broom test?
Ответитьsame with steam
the broom test isnt something new
So many people made memes of this. Apparently NASA saw that and said "oh that's a good idea"
ОтветитьAh yes, this is what funding (lack of it) does to you.
ОтветитьBroom
ОтветитьI love the Operation Paperclip reference at the end.
Ответитьinfared scaner
Ответитьheh heh vhat? lol
ОтветитьOn the subject of brooms as detection devices, that happens with high pressure oil lines too. A high pressure oil spray can mean injecting oil under your skin, which is VERY bad for you, so if there is a risk then people will carry a broom handle in front of them looking for those leaks. When a section gets cut off, you found one.
