Quin, the scene where data is cutting into the Diana cake has been lodged in my brain for like 25 years! I thought it wasn't real, it freaked me out so badly as a kid! So glad you played that clip, I thought I dreamed it.

Fire in the sky is for sure a scary movie and for sure gave me nightmares when I was a kid. But the documentary is pretty tame. Dude explained he woke up on the ship, some grays were there. He grabbed what looked like the eye-rods from the roswell crash and started swinging. The grays were terrified of him. Then a Nordic alien shows up wearing a helmet and man handles him. They then take him on a tour of the ship(?), he mentions the halls and floors of the facility/ship were wavy, ie not flat and angular like ours, the floors waved up and down and the hall ways did too. Then they take him outside the ship and its revealed he's in a massive ship way bigger than he thought. They showed him a star map. Thats all I remember. Nothing like the movie.

I see The Three Body Problem as being heavily flavored by the Chinese version of Xenophobia. Europe and the USA are certainly inspirations for the Tri-Solarians, with their cunning, their naive over-sharing, their technology that isn't radically far ahead, their methods of embargo-as-warfare. China itself spent so long uniting, then dividing, then uniting again that a cultural fear of theirs is definitely chaos, which Americans especially are more likely to embrace under the guise of "freedom."

Rooting Alien Abduction and, more specifically, 'Aliens want our Women' tropes to the civil rights era is profound. That is not talked about enough AT ALL. Media is informed by the zeitgeist, which is in turn informed by the media, creating a sort of social "psychosphere"--an immaterial force that influences the thoughts of the population without them knowing it.

Obviously, as you pointed out, thinking Signs (the movie) is scary doesn't mean you're the Grand Cyclops of your local KKK chapter, but one of the things that the genre of alien abduction or "Aliens want our Women" films relied on was creating a feeling of 'Otherness'. From designs to social structures to the way they spoke, everything had to be as foreign as possible in order to sell something audiences wouldn't otherwise accept--a one dimensional character. Of that era, one of the few things that defined aliens across different films from different genre's, movements, directors, writers, etc was the mono-dimensionality of the alien. It's so foreign that OF COURSE it wants to murder and slaughter and turn us into batteries or breeding machines. Of course they want to destroy our shared culture, turn our histories to myth and legend, erase even the slightest sign of our existence. Of course the alien wants that, just look at how, well, ALIEN it is! And it turns out, most audiences didn't find that very hard to believe at all.

Because that's exactly what the colored couple down the street wants to do. That's exactly what the new generation wants to do. That's exactly what the new Government wants to do. Etc, etc.

I'm not saying Alien films are a conspiracy to turn families down the alt-right pipeline, but the core idea of an invader is something that is, at least in the United States, fundamental to the fabric of society here. The alien is the perfect personification of the populist fear: the 'otherized', untamed, uncontrollable, inexorable future, and in a world of stagnate culture where nostalgia reigns supreme, nothing is quite as terrifying as that.

King is one of the worst authors I’ve ever read, no originality in his works and the only details that he writes in depth about children having orgies. Dudes a full on trashy pedo and Stine and Koontz write circles around that pedo creep.

Signs is absolutely a disappointing film, imo
With a few tweaks it could've been one of the creepiest alien movies ever made; but instead it's so off-kilter and weird that it feels more like it was made by an actual alien...

The Outer Limits had a lot of good episodes! Some dealt with things similar to your mentions, but put a twist on it. There was an episode where, and it's been 20 years now, so I'm barely getting details. I guess someone, humans started changing in some ways. There were some that were almost like you'd imagine a super soldier to be. Tougher, faster, stronger. Heightened senses and more. Some cops catch a female of this genetic offshoot, and they interrogate her. In the process she tells them that almost everything is in order, and she gives just enough information to show them their likely doom. After she gets them agitated, they tell her they're going to force key information out of her. So she ends the interrogation by snapping the handcuffs and breaking her neck. A full 180 twist, and she obviously sees the horrified look on the cops faces. Badass.

"Government is a shared myth. When the myth dies, the government dies"

This is such an american idea. An american myth by itself. A myth of democracy, one that states that a political regime is based on a legitimacy. That the ruler is imposing and supporting the myth because ultimately the regime is based on a will of the people.
Yeah, tell that to Genghis Khan.
And if someone thinks now things are different, or, even funnier, that things in any typical "western democracy" are different - try to not pay tribute to your local Genghis Khan. One will quickly learn what is important to the ruler and what is just a toy that ruler use to entertain and distract the controlled population.

All political power comes from the barrel of a gun. Not from some kind of popular belief. The government dies when it's grip on the gun weakens or if a foreign government knocks a gun out of their hands.

What was terrifying to my daughter as a kid. Was the original Dune movie. The baron is floating around, talking to piter de vries , his suk doctor. No it was his mentat . I think that is his name. Anyways hes putting his hands all over his slave. He can't walk due to raping a reverend mother Gaius Mohiam. The beast Raban is there , squishing bugs and drinking the juice. And his slave is terrified beyond words and he gets his heart plug pulled. Bloods flowing, baron is floating. And black liquid is pouring down his face. And all of them were laughing maniacly. That was it for Abby 😅

Day of the Triffids is a novel by John Wyndham turned into a movie. Village of the Damned is an adaptation of The Midwich Cuckoos by John Wyndham. I’m 20 mins in and the man’s name hasn’t been uttered. Sad, but I guess ultimately not your goal here. Still sad. Liked the video.

It’s funny that humans are obsessed with portraying aliens as some kind of icky scary monsters when in fact they don’t have any reason to be that way. Why wouldn’t they just be more highly evolved versions of us? Different looking of course but not so different as to be giant clicking grasshoppers or something.
