Mechanical handbrake, mechanical steering wheel ..hyraulic or electro-hydraulic but still mechanical not "steel by wire" type of BS

Its an auxiliary brake. Not a parking brake. Its a safety feature in case of catastrophic brake failure. Car manufacturers are morons for fitting electric parking brakes that fail all the time. They should be banned.

newer cars are lighter than ever, truth is cable hand brakes would still be perfect for normal handbrake use. But, what's happening is this new stop start, hill start stuff which requires something a computer can control easily. It's not better, so far as I've heard the cost and maintenance on stop-start systems is costing more time, energy and resources in the long run than cars without them for 99% use cases

electric handbrakes are garbage, no control. And don't get me started on hill-start-assist (that's only in manual cars you usa lot). too much trash on modern cars. I hate hiring cars as then i have to drive some modern junk with steering assist... steering assist my arse... steering knobbery more like...stupid machine trying to take control. One hire car even scolded me on the highway. Ludicrous.

@johnswithen4403 - 25.05.2025 23:09

Because no one seems to care about the independet emergency brake anymore. The manual handbrake is a safety feature as it can be operated even if you loose the normal brakes. The electric handbrake contradicts this basic safety idea as it needs electricity to work.

So basicly newer cars with an electric handbrake are made with one less emergency system that could safe your life.

Mechanic here, just wanted to say that with 8 yrs of dealing with all types of brake systems. The disc brakes with a mechanical emergency hand brake are by far the safest and easiest to repair and dont lose operational features when the battery loses power. The newer modern cars technically have no emergency brake, just a parking brake that will only be functional in park or in neutral with adequate power from the vehicles battery. Also, when trying to replace the rear brake pads and rotor with the electric parking brake motor is keeping us mechanics from doing our job quickly and efficiently which is tough enough as is. And dont even get me started on the electrical problems that can happen when other technicians bypase the motor with a 12v battery, wires, and some alligator clips. To properly compress the calipers, you must use an obd2 scan tool to put the brakes in service mode. Then, you can precede like normal, but after the repair, you must use the scan tool again to take the vehicle out of service mode. We need old school carburated motors with manual transmissions but with disc brakes and independent suspension on all 4 corners, you want cheap, easy to work on, and reliable vehicles that'll last even after an emp blast from a nuke, well now you've got my answer on what im driving in the apocalypse when everything goes to crap.

@NotYou9311
@NotYou9311 - 26.05.2025 00:11

They are "on the way out"... ONLY because of the bizarre fascination with all things electronic. Electronic everything - whether it makes sense, or not. The problem is that electronic bits and bobs are not fully reliable, in the real world. In the lab, maybe so.

Ask yourself - which items have malfunctioned or failed outright on YOUR car, since you've had it ? They are, almost always, ELECTRONIC parts. NOT mechanical. These wonderful electronic faffs....fail at a rate of multiple times as often as analogous mechanical systems. An electronic parking brake ? That is a low-speed accident, waiting to happen. Mechanical parking brakes almost NEVER break - They just get out of adjustment, with brake wear.

The aforementioned insane fascination with all things electronic...in most cases in the auto industry....is really just about profit, anyway. Electronic everything sounds sexy and futuristic....and helps automakers get away with charging outrageous prices for their products.

As a mechanic, don't even get my started on electric p-brakes, especially when the battery dies and U don't have a jumper and scanner to release it. Can't say the amount of times I've had vehicles with some brake issues or another and I'm just using the hand brake to ease to a stop. Foot brakes are not bad as well but less control than hand boys

gotta keep in mind that these are known as emergency brakes too, most button or switch operated handbrake are being replaced by single Park brake, and not many people knew how to activate it in emergency situations, that is: by flip/push and holding it for quite some times.

Because we are supposed to be "consumers" and that is ALL

They wouldn't do this to a fortune 500 company, that was buying a feet of vehicles.
