This is great! I do a lot of this type of shooting for schools and theatre productions. Either cutting live and fixing small errors in post or doing the full cut in post. It's so nice to learn from you and also have confirmation that what I am doing is what other professionals are doing as well. I have multiple sony professional camcorders and we always record on camera and if we directing and cutting live then I use a hyperdeck and a sony mixing desk to record the cut. Also use wireless comms to direct cam ops. I love directing and vision mixing live.

Thanks for the tips! I'll be using them to take my video production up a notch.

I cover local government meetings (usually indoor) and civic events (political debates, outdoor ceremonies, parades, etc) and have just put everything together so I can add a second camera. I'll be shooting most everything live through an ATEM Mini Pro with onboard SD Cards as backups in case things go wrong.

If your peaks are under -20 doesn't that leave your average level close to the noise floor? Or are most mic pres quiet enough that it doesn't matter?

Love hearing talk about shooting these kind of videos. It's not sexy work but there's a lot of it out there. I went from live college sports to doing corporate video, so the hardest part of doing this sort of event is staying focused. It's so easy for a person to move and ruin your shot without you even noticing.

You mention shooting wider to avoid framing errors. When editing in post, do you ever use digital zoom?

Man, you are a hustler, and a filmmaker, and obviously love every aspect (to coin a phrase) of the movies: the history, the imaging tech, production concepts, and you are a good writer. Break a leg, kiddo - B. Dunlap

John, need a question. What brand and model is your monitor and How much is your monitor and its entire set up?

I'm not in the market for a new monitor, but I have seen Apple fans defending the 999$ monitor stand by saying that the people who buy the 6000$ Apple Monitors would have easily afford extra grand for those stands. They also defend the price for all of them by stating how industry standard color calibration are much needed and the ones that the industry used is 10k-15k.

For my experience, all monitors are terrible and some are worse than others, due to simply that colors are never going to be correct on all of them. Most printing shops and smaller studios I've seen, never going to touch anything with those price range, at least I never asked them. People have make 20-minutes ads with just a Macbook for all I see.

So how much are yours? You survived in this business. How much do you spend for your monitors?

I LOVE YOUR CONTENT!! But … is this really a necessary topic?

YOU USE MULTIPLE CAMERAS you’re all welcome. Lol

😝 sorry it just feels… kind of like asking, “how does 1 start a car?” Well… with the key, sir.
