(TOLEDO, OHIO)- Today was another out of the many events they mayor hosts entitled Wednesdays with Wade. Today speakers from each city department spoke on the issues provided by citizens. Many off the issues brought up during the meeting included alley pickup, The Blade newspaper pollution and of course potholes.
The people had questions and the mayor provided them with answers. It was not just the mayor it was also police chief George Kral, Fire chief Brian Byrd and the head of streets, bridges and harbor which includes the issue of potholes and public service which included alleys and nuisance properties.
Many issues were brought up and the mayor was paraded with the issues. One woman who knows someone with a disability discussed how people with disabilities can startle officers with hand movements. Police officers handled questions and the mayor describe the head of Streets, Bridges and Harbor as “Poor guy” because he gets hammered with pothole complaints daily from citizens who are just not happy with these constant potholes.
After speaking with the mayor one-on-one I learned he had many thoughts about issues including his new weight loss initiative Take It Off, Toledo!, Tarta and of course the state charging for red light cameras. He says he call governor DeWine on the topic of the city having raised taxes due to the red light cameras which cities like Dayton also used. The mayor says “I respect him and we are in 2 different political parties.” The mayor also dropped a suprising fact that is that Tarta is not run by the city of Toledo the mayor said and I quote “The city cannot fire anyone from Tarta because that is their own decision.” And the mayor also talked about the new citywide weight loss initiative Take it off, Toledo! He says “This not about what the magazines want us to be it is about health and wellness”. He quoted John F. Kennedy’s quotes on the basis that is we will be happier in our lives when we get around better and enjoy all of lifes moments. One thing JFK said about physical fitness and I quote “Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity.
UPDATE | 4•4•19 | 4am: The mayor released a statement on the state budget and here is what he had to say. “The budget signed by the Governor today will have a devastating negative impact on our city. Toledoans will now be forced to pay higher gas taxes, and yet incredibly enough, they will see their budget cut by $6.5 million. Meanwhile, our citizens will be less safe because the State of Ohio has taken away an important tool that our police and law enforcement professionals believe they need to protect us.
Toledo gets higher taxes, less money, and streets that are more dangerous. This is a slap in the face to our police department, our police chief George Kral, and to every citizen who believes Toledoans should have the right to govern themselves.
Short-sighted policies like this have made educated young people Ohio’s number one export. We continue to lose population compared to the rest of the country, but once again, they have doubled down on their attacks on cities like Toledo and have failed to adequately invest in Ohio’s infrastructure.
There can no longer be any question what the politicians in Columbus think of us — they hate Toledo, and they have now passed a budget that proves it.
