With an open bottom container like this, you can cut out the sod from the bottom with a spade, run it through a screen to separate the dirt and grass, throw the grass clippings in with the leaves, and now you have topsoil for the last layer. You can also just lay the sod on upside down as the top layer, but it won't be as easy to plant.

Never plant crops on actively decaying matter. Why not just make a composter and skip right to the "add aged compost" stage?
